Fresh eyes needed for this puzzle, please.
I have James Grace b. (according to census info) 1809-1811 in Horsley Derbys (Horsley Woodhouse) His wife was Ann -b. c. 1812 Broughton Leics Both were Frame Work Knitters (not an uncommon occupation!!). Most of their married life they lived in Holbrook Derbys.
I cannot find a marriage for this couple. Can anyone help? Maybe they married in Leics?? I cannot find a baptism for James either???
I have only found 1 child of this union -Charles Grace b.c.1836 in either Leics or Derbys On census his p.o.b. is given as Eaton Derbys, S Eaton Leics As there is Long Eaton in Derbys (locally referred to as Eaton) and there is Eaton leics -it could be either??? Charles doesn't show up with his parents until 1851 census in Holbrook Derbys The only Charles of similar age I can find in 1841 is age 4 in Somercotes Derbys, b. in county and living with William Greasley and family -and 60 year old William Grundy -it looks as if Charles and William Grundy are in same household, but living seperately to the Greasley family. IGI shows a christening of Charles grace 1 jan 1837 Alfreton Derbys -parents James/Anne. If Charles was based in Somercoates, Alfreton would be a feasable place of baptism. I have Charles marriage , descendants etc, it is his beginnings I am unsure of. 1841 I find James and Ann Grace -both 25 living in St margaret's leics-Ann b.in county, James not. There is a James Grace age 30 living in Duffield Derbys with wife Alice and 2 children, but i don't think this is the James I am seeking ( but you never know!!!) 1851 onward James and Ann live in Holbrook. In 1851 census they have neice Elizabeth Flint (5) living with them (b Broughton Leics)-she is possibly the daughter of John Flint (FWK) who on later census is shown as a widower in Broughton Leics. Could John be Ann's brother?-or was his wife her sister?
If anyone could find a marriage of James/Ann(e) it would really help. Or any other baptism of Charles-although I think the Alfreton one is possibly correct.
Any assistance/comments gratefully received
Suz

Charles is possibly born at Little Eaton Derbyshire according to 1861 which is about half an hours walk from horsley and just down the road from Holbrook. It is one of my regular walks.

Thank you, yonderpeasant, I know that area pretty well, but Little Eaton hadn't even entered my mind!!! I think I am so bogged down with this that I have just been going round in circles. I think the Alfreton baptism is quite possibly Charles, but why were James and Ann living in leicester in 1841 -and Charles was not with them? I thought maybe they were visiting Ann's family, but the census looks as if they were the only occupants of the house. I suppose there is the possibility of Charles being the son from a previous marriage of James, but if that is so, and the Alfreton christening is correct, then the first wife would have been called Ann, too? I think I have to find a marriage for James/Ann. Maybe I should do some research on the Greasley family and William Grundy (who Charles was with in 1841) to see if there is any connection there?
Lovely area where you take your regular walks. Thanks again, Suz

Hi, The 1851 Census Entry for Charles Grace 14 states place of birth as Derby L. Eaton. Which would indicate Little Eaton.
There is a marriage of a James Grace to Ann Grundy 5.12.1835 St. Alkmunds Derby. It is possible that the 1841 Census Entry indicates that William Grundy age 60 is the G.Father of Charles Grace age 5, also that Mary Greasley wife of William Greasley is the daughter of William Grundy.
William Grundy = Ann and had:- Mary Grundy Bpt 15.3.1809 Ockbrook = Wm Greasley 9.10.1828 Duffield, Derbys Ann Bpt 29.12.1811 Ockbrook = James Grace 5.12.1835 St. Alkmund Derbys Charles Bpt 9.10.1813 Ockbrook Christopher Martin 3.7.1816 Ockbrook
If you follow John Flint B Swinford through to 1871 Census he has a G. Daughter Hannah Flint B 1858 Holbrook Derbys living with him, her Bpt is on IGI the daughter of Wm. Flint & Sarah.
Only bpt I can discover for a James Grace Born abt 1809 is Bpt 24.1.1808, Quarndon not too far from Holbrook,Little Eaton etc., and could be parish of his Mother.
Hope this is of assistance. Spendlove

Hi Spendlove,
Thank you soooo much. You have given me excellent information to work on.
I have had a mental block with this family for so many years!!
James/Ann's son Charles, had a son Charles who married my great gran's sister.
They had a son Charles who died age 15 days, then had a son Cecil, who had Grace Crescent in Heanor named after him!
I have a very elderly aunt who was quite close to Cecil -and remembers a lot of the family, so this new information will enable me to research further and I know will really please my aunt.
Thank you once again - and for all other research you have assisted me and many others with.
A very grateful Suz

Thanks, yonderpeasant, I found that about 10 mins ago -great minds-and all that!!!! they are a very mixed up family. William Grundy had a son Christopher Martin Grundy (baptism found by Spendlove) - who you have found on 1851 with parents William /Ann -1861 he is married to Ann has 3 children aged 4-9 and also a 19 yr old son Thomas Burnham -and next door was Jonathan Burnham age 43!! I seem to be digging further holes !!!! I cannot find Christopher Martin Grundy in 1841, but have found a Christopher Martin of correct age in correct area!!!!!! I used to live in Mapperley and up until about 15 years ago a Martin family with long time village connections still lived there!!!!!
Also I have ancestors (from another line) who lived at Cotgrave House Mapperley in late 1880's
I'm beginning to feel so inbred- you've heard the phrase "village idiot" well............here I am!
