I puzzled over an address in Edmonton for a while until I discovered it had been bombed in WW2 and when the area was rebuilt new lanes and street names appeared. I had posted a query on one of the genuki sites and got a reply describing where my street had been. I actually visited there recently and it was quite interesting in that you could see from the age and look of the buildings exactly which bit had been rebuilt - and exactly where the bomb must have hit. Somewhere there is a website on lost london streets, but sorry, I can't give the link or any closer details.

Hi, silver street still exists. I believe it used to be part of the the infamous North circular rd (a406) until the new north Circ underpass was built. Nearby is the North Middlesex Hospital also there is a silver street Station , which runs down to Liverpool street station in London. The map link is here http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=51.6167&lon=-0.0816&scale=5000&icon=x
Ps, I wouldn't recommend travelling to the area alone or at night. Has a reputation as a bit rough area.

Lyn, here is a picture of the church in silver st to give you an idea.
http://www.london.anglican.org/ChurchShow_1805
If you need a picture of a specific address I may be able to help. ( I dont think there are too many old buildings left down there anymore sadly. Some turn of the last century terraced housing )

Silver Street, Edmonton still exists but as already mentioned has very few old buildings. Historically, Silver Street was where the Edmonton Union Workhouse stood. It was completed in 1842. Nowadays, much of the workhouse remains and forms part of the North Middlesex Hospital.
The area around Silver Street in Edmonton circa 1850 was bleak as sanitary conditions were poor in the extreme. There was overcrowding and even an outbreak of typhus in 1851.
By contrast, there were some fine houses in the locality including Pymmes Park which was a private estate.
The railway was responsible for Edmonton's rapid development.
Nowadays, Silver Street is 'home' to a secondary school, a library, small theatre, arts centre, pub (at least one!), a church and housing which mainly date from the 1930's although there are houses both older and newer.. The road itself is fairly quiet as it runs parallel with the busy North Circular. It's certainly not picturesque!
Do you want me look your grandfather up on the 1881 Census? Fliss
