Wiltshire family in Devizes or Bishops Canning
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 09:54 BST (UK) »

I have a William Wiltshire shown in the 1851 census living in Birmingham as born in Devizes abt 1798.

I have looked at the parish records at the records office and can find no Wiltshires in St John's parish and a few in St Mary's but not in the right date. There are also a few in Southbrook but again cannot see the right name and close date.

However there are many Wiltshires in Bishops Canning but I could not see a William Wiltshire in the book around the right sort of years. William was already in Birmingham in the early 1820's as this is when his children were born and he married a Birmingham girl - so I presume they married in Birmingham although have not yet found record of that marriage.

When looking through the parish records I was also looking for names that appeared amongst his children to see if I could spot any family links but could not see anything obvious.

Does any one have any suggestions as I appear to have found a brick wall.

Regards

Yes this is the right family. 1851 is the first mention of Devizes as a birthplace. I also cannot find them in 1861 - I think William died in 1862 ( I am waiting for a death certificate to arrive). Charlotte died in 1867.

I think this is them on 1861 census,

William Wiltshire
Age: 64
Born 1797,  Born: Devizes, Wiltshire, England
Relation: Head
Wifes name: Charlotte , age 55

Civil parish is Kings Norton , Worcestershire

Occupation: Labourer

Class: RG9; Piece: 2121; Folio: 51; Page: 31; GSU roll: 542921.

The record is very badly faded and totally mistranscribed on Ancestry as Willsher with wife Charles W!!!
It looks like they have a daughter and two grandchildren living with them.

The nearest baptism I can find is 8th January 1797 in Seend, Wiltshire.
Father William, mother Rebecca, but without other info its only a possible.

Thank you for this - when the records office reopens in its new venus I may try to follow that up. Seend is certainly close enough to have been described as Devizes - even though I think it is officially in the Melksham district.

It is interesting that the mother was Rebecca as one of Williams later children was called Rebecca.

Also the death certificate gives his age as 65 at time of death in 1862 which does suggest he was born before December 1797. Therefore there are more than a few indications that this could be the same person. I will do some more digging - but that may not be for a few months until the new Wiltshire records office is open.

Thank you for your help.
