This site has maps of the counties in Ontario.
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/
Click on search, and you will see "Maps". If you click on that you will then see the counties. You can search by county, township or town and it will show the map.

Thanks Janice- will try to print off maps of the various areas I now seem to be involved in.
That's the site I think I used a while back when checking out landholdings of various people in Ontario- the generation of the Humphries/joyce family that preceeded those about whom i am now enquiring. Appreciate your help.

Yes, Charlotte, you can just put the surname in also for a search and it will show you the tract of land owned by an ancestor, then hit locate on map and it will show you where it was...enlarge to view the actual section of land, it's shape, and your ancestor's name ...and also sometimes the land around it may belong to another that you may recognize...Very nice visual online feature to have...! J.J.
the left enlarged image doesn't come up for me, anymore, for some reason, must be my browser again...

Hi JJ, The map site is good- have printed off the 1880s map of Ontario with the counties. That Dundas and Grenville are adjacent makes sense of change of location of family members- it is all close together.
Am I correct in thinking that the large subdivisions of a Co. are what is called a Twp? eg in Dundas Co there are 4 sections shown on the Dundas Co map:- Mountain, Winchester, Matilda, Williamsburgh. These 4 are called TWPs? Do I have the terminology correct? Within the TWp there are obviously towns-e g North Mountain- are these just called towns?
Will check out the site and see if my SUFFELs owned any land around Mountain, as you suggested might be worth doing. Thanks for that.

JJ, My question to you on terminology has just been answered by the dialogue boxes when I went to the McGill site and searched for "People". Dundas Co, Mountain Twp, and then towns. but only two towns are on offer- Aultsville and Inkerman. Maybe they haven't got around to digitalizing the other towns. So I didn't find any reference there to my lot but at least I now have a bit more knowldge on the terminology. Thanks, charlotte

You could try searching some of the directories for that area as well.
Canadian Directories (National Archives site) http://www.collectionscanada.ca/canadiandirectories/index-e.html
Internet Archive - (search at top of page for Dundas County Directory. You can also search for Huron County Directory). You have to search manually, as it can't be searched the way it is copied) http://www.archive.org/index.php

Twp is short for township. Municipality is I think a more modern term used by towns and more urban regions? The layers of government in Ontario get a bit confusing, especially as towns grow bigger. Historically, some townships had towns in them that were big enough to be run as a separate entity, so you had a town government operating within a township and a county. Other townships were more rural and, while they did have several villages, did not have any settlements big enough to be incorporated as towns, so everything was run at the township level. As towns and villages grow and actually mesh together with other nearby places and cross township boundaries, we are getting all sorts of wierd new amalgamated municipalities, like the "City of Kawartha Lakes", which is actually about 4 towns and all the rural areas in between them.
There is a good on-line exhibit at the Archives of Ontario that explains all the different kinds of divisions that have ben used in Ontario since it's creation, including the early Districts (pre-counties), the counties, and then the recent trends in amalgamation...
