the only birth on Freebmd I could see for Walter William Hughes was registered Epsom - that's why I went with those deaths but I was in 1845 not 1846. I take it his birth was registered Stepney. Thought it seemed a bit unlikely. Using the phonetic search on FreeBmd, it offers alternatives of Hawkes, Hiscock, Haycock, Hossick and even Haggis!
I'd go for another birth cert to double check maiden name in case of error. Of course, they might not have married before the birth of the first child.
Sorry!

what you get from the GRO is a copy, so the error would have to be in the info they have. Birth certs are meant to have all previous names of the mother on them, but that would depend on the mother telling the registrar. If the father registered the birth, he might not know. Are you getting the references from FreeBmd or using the full index - free on Ancestry? Not everything is on FreeBmd as yet. From civil registration, all deaths had to be registered so it should be there somewhere. Saying that, I can't find deaths for 2 of my ancestors, but knowing their jobs, they would more than likely be working away from home and could be hidden under a variant.

Only the complete GRO index is free on Ancestry http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8966&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0 although you have to register. The complete GRO index is also on Findmypast - definitely not free.

ok, I've had a look throught the full index and noted any Ann(e) Hughes in the vague area - sorry my knowledge of London isn't good, much more at home in south west Wales.
sept qtr 1844 Ann Matilda Hughes Bethnal Green vol 2 pg 46 dec qtr 1844 Ann Hughes E London vol 2 pg 177 dec qtr 1844 Ann Hughes Bethnal Green vol 2 pg 21 march qtr 1845 Ann Hughes Whitechapel vol 2 pg 483 sept qtr 1845 Anne Hughes St Pancras vol 1 pg 188 Dec qtr 1845 Ann Hughes Holborn vol 2 pg 90 dec qtr 1845 Ann Hughes Marylebone vol 1 pg 121 (unlikely)
didn't look further as time seemed rather tight for next Hughes baby on 1/9/1846!

checked under Hughs as well - nothing. checked the marriage index from sept qtr 1844 to dec 1846, not a Walter Hughes to be seen, although there are a few plain Williams in registration district 2.
