Hi Carole,

This is a service man from the 1st world war. Going by the bondalier across his upper body and the evidence of spurs he would have been in a mounted regiment. Taking that his name is the one shown on the bottom left hand corner as being David Roberts there are 410 such men with that name on the national archives 1st ww campaign medals site. Did he have a middle name by any chance as this may help in searching for his medal card more easily.

Hi Old Rowley

He doesn't have a middle name. He was born in Ruthin (if that helps).

He may have been in the Royal Welsh - did they have any mounted regiments (even typing that it sounds like a stupid question - apologies I have no idea about the different regiments)

Could you be so kind as to point me in the right direction for some further information.

Thanks

I would post the image on the armed forces board Carole as there maybe someone who would, or will, be able to help you more than I can. Post what you have, you now know that he was from a mounted regiment or one that used horses such as the Army Service Corps, that it was taken during the first ww (in 1922/24 collar badges known as collar dogs were introduced to the uniforms, as there are none of those showing then you know that it is before then). I can not see any rank chevron's on his arms so that means that he was a private. I am sure that someone else will be able to add abit more and they may even point you in another direction.

About the best I can do!.

He may also have served in the horse artillery!

Mike.
