Florenstone Street, any idea's...
« on: Monday 30 October 06 13:30 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone.

A relative of mine has an address on the 1881 census as
27 Florenstone Street, Pt Houses, London, Middlesex.

Firstly, can any one please tell me where Florenstone Street was and secondly, what would "Pt Houses" mean, all I can think of is that this meant Private Houses.

Many thanks,
F H

Hi FH

Floreston Street  was in Mile End Old Town - between 282 and 284 Mile End Road - perhaps somebody else can advise as to the approximate location on a map Huh

Hi FH

I've scanned an image from my 1937 copy of 'The Authentic Map Directory of London & Suburbs.

If you send me a personnal message with your email address on it, I'll send it to you.

In the meantime, I'll try to work out how to make it smaller and post it here.

I've attached a link to multimap, Floreston street is under what is now the Ocean Estate, just off White Horse Lane

Hope this works.

Floreston Street can be found on the right hand side of this image. It is on the grid line for square 24, inbetweeen White Horse Lane and Calverley Street.

Ignore the number 63, that indicates the next page.

Like you, my best guess is that it would be private houses

Hi Casalguidi.

Thats the only thing that I can think of.   Roll Eyes

Do you reckon that there would be any pictures around of that road, or possibly the houses themselves.

Just a thought.   Huh

Hi F H

This area would come under Tower Hamlets now so I would perhaps contacting the archives here http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/data/libraries-leisure/data/libraries/history-archive.cfm

They are generally very helpful and they do have a picture library. There is an email address on the page.

Good luck

Hi FH

Here's a bit more detail of the local area from a 1916 map.

Hi every one.

Just wanted to say a BIG thanks to all of you who helped me on this one...

I contacted Tower Hamlets as Biker suggested and they were kind enough to send me a house numbered map of the original street, as well as a copy of an old photograph.
In the distance of the photo you can even see the old house (No. 27) that I was looking for.

Now thats what I call a result.       Grin Grin

Many thanks to you all,

Hello to F H

I also had a relative who lived in Floreston Street and through reading your previous correspondence have obtained from Tower Hamlets Archives an unnumbered street map and photocopy of the street which unfortunately is obscured by a horse and carriage.

I was wondering if you could supply me with copies of your numbered street map and the photo which you got from Tower Hamlets as they sound better than these ones.  I would of course reimburse your expenses for this request.
