Fauldhouse - strange birthplace?
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 10:41 GMT (UK) »

Robert Montgomery & his wife Jeanie (nee Kennedy) had a baby son David - born 22nd August, 1915 - at 8 o'clock in the morning - at the Masonic Hall, Fauldhouse.

Can anyone provide a suggestion as to why he was born there?

I have asked the Freemas on museum in Scotland - they suggested that Jeanie was attending some sort of function and started in labour?HuhHuh?

or

they were living there as carertakers?  This seems unlikely too, as Robert's occupation is given as Coal Miner.

The couple had married in Belfast back in 1897, and we know David had older siblings....but have no more information about where they were born or when the family moved to Scotland.....

any help REALLY appreciated!

Hello, what other info do you have ref David Montgomery ? My mother remembers "old " Bob Montgomery living in Steel's  Row (now part of Sheephousehill). There were two Lodges in Drybrig' (bridge Street), St. Andrew's 380 and St John 374. The buildings were about two hundred yards apart, but after the lodges merged St. Andrew's was made in to 4 dwellings so the family could have lived there. St. John's also had a dwelling but the Robbs lived there. House numbers were a later addition : St. Andrew's would have occupied nos30 to 36 Drybrig' or Bridge Street.

We know very little....but are working on it !

We knoiw Robert Montgomery was still alive in 1950 when his wife died.

I now have her death certificate...she is listed as Janet Fee Montgomery.  Their address at that time is givcen as

Janefield Cottage, Bridge Street, Fauldhouse.  (Could this have been the St Andrews lodge?)

She was 76.....not found Roberts death yet.

Her death was registered by their son - John Montgomery....so now we know the names of two sons - David & John.

I also have Janet's parents (Scottish records are brilliant!)
Matthew & Mary Ann Kennedy  (nee Giffen).

More info from my mother: The Montgomeries probably stayed in the hallkeepers' dwelling of St. John's Lodge prior to the Robbs, Janefield is still there just to the south of the Lodge. John died some years ago and his brother Mathew died this year. His wife lived in Janefield while Mathew was in the forces during the war. There was a sister staying in the house, name forgotten just now, who had been widowed at a young age.

This is wonderful information.

Does your Mum know if John or Matthew had any family?

David was in the air force during the war and stationed in Norfolk, where he married.   He has three daughters.   His wife died a couple of years ago, but he is living in a nursing home (unfortunately not able to communicate now).

My friend, his daughter, Kath is away at the moment - but can't wait for her to get back and to show her this.

Thank you so much!!

I have just found a marriage (on Scotlands People website) in 1924...this was at  the Baillie Institue, Fauldhouse.

Between

William Montgomery (26) & Annie Cunningham (24).

(Wiliam was also a coalminer)  His parents werelisted as William & Elizabeth Montgomery - one of the witnesses was a Robert Montgomery - he gave the same address as the groom.

22  (looks like) 5th Street, Bains...? or Rainsf..... Huh

I should think they are connected in some way - maybe my Robert was this (older) William's brother?

Hello again, sorry to hear of death of David. I spoke to Mathew's widow today; she remembers David and the rest of the family- David was the last of the siblings. Mrs. montgomerie has a son and daughter, they will be cousins of your friend, she would be the best local source for more info.
