Can anybody give me info on Page's Brewery in Peterborough - It's in Westgate. & mentioned on the Front page of District 40 of 1881 census - as being omitted. Could this have had residential properties Huh
I'm still looking for my Partridge ancestors missing from 1881 census.

thanks for looking JohnP

I've just looked through all the Peterborough traders listed in the 1847 Post Office directory available on CD. Page's is not listed, but the following were all the establishments producing or selling alcoholic drinks in Westgate then (and I see from the listings that at least some of them must have been residential, as other trades were carried on from them by the landlords);

John KING beer retailer Westgate
Thomas KERRY beer retailer Westgate
John William MOWBURN dealer in foreign wines and British spirits Westgate
Robert MACKLEY "Crown" Westgate
William PHILLIPS "Bull" commercial inn Westgate
John WEBB Ostrich brewery North Street Westgate
John WEBB Ostrich inn North Street Westgate
John D. SIMPSON brewer Mansion house brewery Westgate

Not sure if this will be helpful, but still...

There would appear to be a brewery still in that area
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/guide/peterborough.shtml
makes mention of a brewery next door to the pub under review.

address is given as 80 Westgate,Peterborough.

Thanks Falkyrn & Geoff for your replies.
I''ve been doing some more research on your leads

Falkyrn - the pub in your link is relatively new & the attached brewery is Oakham Ales - established 1993

Geoff - no new info found on the Ostrich brewery, but the Ostrich Inn in North street, is now Bogart's bar & grill.

Anyhow I think I've solved the query - searching the 1881 census on Ancestry, for occupation 'brewer' + keyword 'Westgate'  in Peterborough - guess who turns up  Roll Eyes Sidney Jno Page & family . It must be a small family business rather than a commercial premises.

Thanks for your interest - I think I'll have another beer  JohnP

Make mine an Ostrich then... (one of the locals not far from here is an Old Ostrich, supposed to be a medieval pub, perhaps brought stone by stone from Peterborough? Wink)
