think it would be worth getting the death certificate from 1886 and hope that home address is mentioned. That way you could eliminate death if it's the wrong person. If it's the correct Thomas, you need to look elsewhere for Agnes' father. There is at least one family of McArthurs in Middlesborough at the time, but I don't think you could prove it for sure. I wondered whether you had come across the name elsewhere in your searches?

Hiya - can I join in
Did he die in Middlesbrough your man?? If so, why not email middlesbrough indexes and ask them to confirm the address on the death certificate, if it is your man, then go ahead and order, they are pretty good for that type of thing and you can do it online, I received info last week regarding one of my rellies

Good luck

well, that is interesting! Don't think we knew about Harriet earlier as we were working from 1881 and 1891. That does lend credence to a Mr McArthur being the father of the 2 girls. Do you have Harriet's birth certificate? If not, are you going to get it?
As to the living relative on the marriage cert, it wasn't necessary. My grandmother had her father on her marriage certificate and she would have been under age - he'd been dead since she was 5! His details were on her brother's marriage cert the following year and no mention of deceased either.
I can feel a paraphrase of Lady Bracknell coming on - losing one parent a misfortune, losing two being careless etc. That can definitely be applied to children being born after your husband died if that is the case.

There doesn't seem to be an obvious Mr M(a)cArthur living nearby. There is a Catherine McArthur who is married but husband isn't at home (she married Robert Dawson MacArthur in 1873). I can't find him anywhere, but I think it is expecting too much for him to be the mystery father. R

I think we have our man.
In 1891 Elizabeth had a lodger called Gilbert McCally (according to the index). The name seemed suspiciously close to McArthur and, normally, lodgers are put after the main family, but Gilbert is placed immediately after Elizabeth.
Looking at the original entry his name looks more like Gilbert McCatty.
In 1901 he was still living in Middlesbrough (RG13/4574):
Gilbert McCarthey, 47, boarder, pipe moulder, single, b Glasgow
And by 1908 his name had finally become what we want!
Death: Jun 1908 Gilbert McArthur age 52 Middlesbrough 9d 316 (I wonder whether he left a will mentioning his daughters)
I am sure that this is Agnes' father.
Richard
