it's a pleasure and Suz has worked so hard with all that info- you will have to sit and write it down and cross reference!!
Sadly though there is no absolute confirmation re James Hicks - there is the quite positive evidence though of music and tailoring - how did you find out about Winifred's marriage- did Eva also marry? I would imagine that it would still have James as father- Edith, unless she married again, may have wanted to keep her respectability.
I have 'googled' for Norman House - have presumed it would be a large house where  Winifred would be in service - but then she would have had a job on her marriage certificate!!
I wonder if you contacted local studies at Devon CC they might be able to tell you.
best wishes

Heywood,
I thought Winifred may have worked at Norman House, but doubt she would have had her occupation on her marriage cert-not one of mine has from that time

Have found this
1901
2nd Highland Light Infantry Imperial Yeomanry
Aldershott
James Hicks 25 Single Bugler Soldier HL Infantry Kentish Town London
RG13 612 24 42

Just a thought-a musical connection??
he could have left home and told porkies to join the army??

Clutching at straws now -but trying to leave no stone unturned!!!!

There are a few James Hicks b. London , but none that quite fit in 1891
There is a james W Hicks -correct age b. kentish Town London , but in 1901 he is married living in Essex and is a bricklayer.

It would be good to hear any further info

yes - I suppose as you say they didn't put an occupation- not important enough or not expected to work thereafter.

At the moment, I think I am going with James just packing up and going for whatever reason.  You are sure that he was born Penzance and that year, are you?

As you say Mary is in Wiltshire, nursing. She too comes from Penzance ..so.. we could invent all sorts of situations but who knows?
Lastly, did they get ever get married in SA - perhaps even years later?
Is there any way of checking immigration to SA- did Mary emigrate alone or as a single woman etc?
That's this morning's thoughts for the day!

I calculated James's birth date from his age (76y 10m) as recorded on his death notice in August 1949.  I have always been led to believe that they came from Cornwall and his grandson has recently told me that the family lived in and around Penzance.  So I am pretty sure of the date and place.

Unfortunately there are no immigration records for that period in South Africa and I have tried finding them on www.ancestorsonboard.com but can't ídentify any obvious names.  Also looked for Mary under her maiden name, but found nothing.

I agree one can never be absolutely sure that you have the right person in cases like these.  Maybe someone who does know more will see these posts and put me out of my misery...

Thanks to both of you Suz and Heywood for all your hard work.
