Hi, does anyone know anything about 'bastardy' records (unsure if that is the right term)? Did they exist in the early 1900's and if so are there any records on line for Cumberland? A relative had at least 3 children out of wedlock and I wondered who paid for them. Cass
Hello, it might be worth trying the Cumbria records office at the following link: www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/carec.asp Not sure what is online for Cumbria but the ones for Lancashire are held at the records office in Preston.
Best of luck
