Strange surname
« on: Thursday 26 April 07 10:17 BST (UK) »

I've just been doing a bit of research into some of my Oxfordshire ancestors and have come across a surname which I've never heard of before - FUNGE.

It's not in the Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames.

Anyone know how you would pronounce it?

I should be grateful really. This family actually named one of their sons Funge Foster! The Funge turned out to be his grandmother's maiden name, so helped me trace back another couple of generations.

For all I know, there are probably thousands of you out there!

Hi Jill ...

What a great name!  I just had to go and see if there were any FUNGEs on the Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837) - and there are!

12 males (1664-1795) - inc. 8 in Thame
12 females (1666-1817) - inc. 5 in Thame

Let me know if you would like any more detailed information.

Pennie

PS I would pronounce it to rhyme with "grunge"!

Hi Pennie,

It was the Thame PRs where I found them!

In my head, I was pronouncing it to rhyme with 'bung' or even as fungi ( mushrooms?!) but you're probably right and it's as in grunge.

I'm related to the Funges of Thame, you know!!  Roll Eyes

Great name. I wonder if it's peculiar to Oxfordshire?

Since the name goes back to the seventeenth century when it was common to add an "e" to the end of words ending "ng" to make the "g" hard I would expect it to rhyme with bung.
