Steve

If Harriet 'Pearce' is the mother of Jane Ellen M, I see no immediate connection to Thomas and his daughter Emma. You would have to obtain Jane Ellen M's birth certificate to prove her mother's maiden name was Pearce.
The only baptism I can find for a Thomas Pearce is this one

PEARSE, Thomas Henry
Christening Date:30 Nov 1817    Piddletown, Dorset
Mother:Ann PEARSE

plus potential sibling

PEARCE, Selina
Christening Date:23 Sep 1827    Piddletown, Dorset
Mother:Ann PEARCE

1841 census HO107 285/6 folio 25 page 7
Piddletown  Dorset
Selina Pearce 13  Dorset

A possible marriage

BURGESS, George   Age:18
Wife:Selina PEARCE   Age:19
Marriage Date:13 Mar 1847 Corfe Castle, Dorset

Thomas' marriage entry appears to confirm he was illegitimate.

PEARCE, Thomas
Elisabeth PAYNE
Marriage Date:23 Oct 1842 Piddletown, Dorset
Wife's Father:John PAYNE

The most likely candidate for Ann, Thomas' mother if she were born Piddletown which is a big if with no known information about her at this point is

PEARSE, Ann
Christening Date:28 Jan 1798   Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARSE
Mother:Sarah

Ann was William and Sarah's oldest child baptised Piddletown. The other potential siblings are

PEARCE, Elizabeth
Birth Date:15 Feb 1800
Christening Date:16 Mar 1800    Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARCE
Mother:Sarah GRIFFIN

PEARCE, James
Birth Date:23 Nov 1802
Christening Date:19 Dec 1802    Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARCE
Mother:Sarah GRIFFIN

PEARCE, Robert
Birth Date:7 Oct 1804
Christening Date:1804 Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARCE
Mother:Sarah GRIFFIN

PEARCE, Susannah
Christening Date:1 Feb 1807 Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARCE
Mother:Sarah

PEARCE, Charlotte
Christening Date:23 Apr 1809   Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARCE
Mother:Sarah

PEARCE, William
Christening Date:9 Jun 1816 Piddletown, Dorset
Father:William PEARCE
Mother:Sarah

This is now a long trail with not enough collaborating records to prove it. I can see no connection with any Harriet Pearces born Dorset circa 1845 and Pearces in Piddletown.

Thank you

I have been on this site you suggested...very good http://www.findmypast.com/HomeServlet
and found Frederick and Annie they were twins born in "Ahmednugger" the date being 1882 probably transcribed wrong and is 1872.

All the other children are there also ,says Florence E born Limerick

Just have to wait now for the certs now Grin

The National Archives will hold Charles Maidens army record if you want to know more about that.
Their research guides. Scroll down to those on the British Army.

I think it might be Ahmadnagar?

Was Gilbert aware his father was born in India?

Thanks Valda

Step ahead of you on the archives... Grin

Gilbert is total unaware of India...think the name change will be a surprise as well.( will show him ,when the certs arrive etc)

I wonder if Frederick changed it by deed pole...did they do that then? or did he just change it.....he may well have fallen out with his father because he wanted to work the land and not go into the army  Huh

I did ask him today about Edward...(Shadrick still gives him the giggles) he says" he has never had a brother called Edward......but if Ted was alive (and he knew everything) he would tell me that as well" ... Grin......eh...eh..OK ....so Edwards his brother.......

I am getting there

There would be no need to change his surname by deed poll. Even today you can be known by any name you like, you just have to alert all the bureacracy that in future you wish to be known by this name. In Frederick's time that wasn't really an issue. It is possible from around 1881 Frederick began living with his grandfather and not his parents, but even so unless there was some sort of estrangement you wouldn't expect him to revert to his mother's maiden name, especially since there is clearly no question of illegitimacy.
