Wilts, Dorset, Berks and Somerset ancestry
|
Hi Folks,
Greetings from Toronto, Canada.
Is anybody researching the family of James CHISMAN junior, who was born in East Knoyle, Wilts, in 1816, a son of James CHISMAN senior, yeoman, and Martha SANGER?
In 1843, in West Knoyle, Wilts, he married Ann RUMSEY of that parish; James junior was a yeoman farmer of 520 acres in Lushill, near Castle Eaton (census of 1851); in the census of 1861, James 42 was a farmer in Pewsey, living with Annie 40 and Elizabeth 16; lastly, James was a farmer of 1,103 acres in Winterborne Bassett (census of 1871), all in Wiltshire; James was buried (m.i.) in Winterborne Bassett in 1876, aged 60; Ann, a widow, was buried in St. Michael’s church, Wilsford, Wilts, in 1883, aged 63; James junior and Ann had issue:
1. Elizabeth CHISMAN, born in Lushill, Castle Eaton in 1844, baptized in Castle Eaton in 1845; in 1869, in Pewsey, she married William LAWRENCE, farmer of Sharcott, near Pewsey; William had been born in 1841 in Idstone, Berks, a son of James LAWRENCE and Sarah Jane HULL; William farmed 475 acres in Sharcott, near Pewsey (census of 1871); and, later, 630 acres in Normanton, in the parish of Wilsford (censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901), both in Wiltshire; Elizabeth was buried in Wilsford, Wilts, in 1876, aged 31; m.i. for William and Elizabeth in Wilsford churchyard; William and Elizabeth had issue;
2. William Rumsey CHISMAN, born in Lushill, Castle Eaton in 1845, baptized privately in Castle Eaton in 1845; in the 1871 census, William R. 24 was living with his parents in Winterborne Bassett; in St. Mary’s Church, Ashbury, Berks, civil marriage registered in Q3 of 1874, in Faringdon district (BMD ref: 2c / 469), he married Mary Ann LAWRENCE, who was a younger sister of William LAWRENCE; Mary Ann was born in Idstone, Berks, in 1849; Mary Ann died in 1942; William and Mary Ann farmed 720 acres in Chaddleworth Farm, Woolley Park, Berks (censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901), and had issue;
3. James CHISMAN, born in Lushill, Castle Eaton in 1846, baptized in Castle Eaton in 1847; in the 1871 census, James was visiting the family of Stiles JEFFREYS, a retired draper, in Calne, Wilts; in the 1881 census he lived with farmer brother William in Chaddleworth; in 1891, still single, he was living with farmer cousin, Thomas CHISMAN and family in Codford St. Mary; James probably remained a bachelor with no issue.
I am eager to contact any researcher of this CHISMAN family and to share CHISMAN family history notes.
Best wishes.
Peter Ferreira.
