Help please with Hanley
« on: Friday 13 April 07 10:30 BST (UK) »

Hi All

I live in Oz and was wondering if anyone would have any idea if/or where I could locate who was living at 15 Rutland Street Hanley in 1920?

I realise this is very "modern" for genealogical research , but have details from a birth certificate that James Dickinson was born 7/2/1920 to Ann Elizabeth Dickinson at 15 Rutland Street.  James father is "unknown" and we were hoping to try to find out who else was in the house. Or if there were any other Dickinson families living in that street.  I have found Dickinson family in 1891 census at 28 Rutland Street, and believe that Ann's mother was Rachel Turner (her father John Dickinson) The Turner family living at 50 Rutland St in 1901 census.

I have tried Historical Directories, but they do not go up to that date and I can't find any Post Office directories online.

Any suggestions welcome

Bye

Hi Noells,  I know this is not an answer to your question, but I did find this picture of what I think is No. 11 Rutland Street, Hanley which would be two doors down from No. 15 - thought you might like to see a picture of the type of houses.  It is near the bottom of the first page.

Hi Cathy

thanks for forwarding this web site to me.

I agree with you regarding the photo of the house. It does help to get a mental picture of where the ancestors lived.
I can't get over the number of rooms the house has. Surely they must be very small rooms.

I still have my fingers crossed that some Rootschatter may come up with an answer to my queries. I have had such wonderful help in the past from them.

Thanks again

Hi

I am going to Stoke Archives tomorrow so was going to offer to look the address up in the electoral register.  However I have just checked their website and they only have electoral registers for Hanley up to 1915 so no help there, the rate books also only go up to 1916.

They do have historical directories that cover 1920s but these only list the head of household so I'm not sure how helpful they would be.  Let me know if you would like me to look at these for you.

Hi Sam

Thank you for your offer. I hope this gets to you before you go to the Archives. I am not sure of the time frame. It is 8pm on Tuesday night here in Oz.

I will leave it to you to look up whatever you think appropriate and that will not take up too much of your time.
Ann Elizabeth Dickinson was born 1900, so I assume would not be on the electoral roll in 1920 anyway. The family story is that her son was fathered by a man Ann worked for and Ann was thrown out of the house when he discovered she was pregnant. Trying to find out who was in the house when James was born is a bit of a long shot, but I thought it might lead somewhere. Maybe other Dickinson families lived in the Street?

thanks again, I really appreciate your offer.

Hi

I did go to the Archives and check the directories for  you but unfortunately there was a gap over the years you wanted.  The closest they had was 1912 and 1932 and neither had any Dickinsons in Rutland Street.

Hi Sam

Thanks so much for trying to find them for me. I knew it would be difficult, even if all the directories were there.

I really appreciate your effort on this one.

Try having a look on this site http://www.thepotteries.org/ there is a message board where you can put down details of people you are looking for . Or have you tried the BBC site for family history, make your self a user name and drop a line or two you never know who might reply.
