This is the only one showing on the IGI
Wiliam Lilly ch. 23.6.1793 Stragglethorpe, Lincs.
Father Matthew Mother Elizabeth.
If he married you could find his fathers name that way.

I believe Helpston(e) was in Northamptonshire not Lincolnshire. What evidence do you have that William Lilley was born in Helpston(e)? Do you have William on a census?
1841 census HO107 815/13 folio 10 page 14 Helpstone Northamptonshire William Lilley 45 Not born Northamptonshire Labourer Alice Lilley 35 Northamptonshire Thomas Lilley 16 Northamptonshire Ann Lilley 10 Northamptonshire Henry Lilley 5? Northamptonshire
Ages of adults (those over 15) usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census.
The only Alice in Helpstone in 1851 was a widow aged 56 born Castor.
Parishes given on marriages are parishes of residence at the time of the marriage (up to three weeks before the marriage for the calling of the banns) they give no indication of birthplace. If the William Lilley in Helpston(e) on the 1841 census is the one you are interested in then he couldn't have been born in Helpston(e) Northamptonshire because the census (if correct) states not born Northamptosnshire.

Valda

Castor is in Northamptonshire. Caistor is in Lincolnshire? Castor Northamptonshire baptisms are covered by the IGI between 1538-1800. No Lilley baptisms. Caistor Lincolnshire only has coverage on the IGI for 1561-1787, but is covered by the BVRI through to the C19th. No Lilley baptisms.
Is the 1841 census entry the right family? From the 1851 census Alice appears to have been born in Castor Northamptosnshire. William was not born anywhere in Northamptonshire if the 1841 census is correct.

Valda

Dear Valda, T hank you for being so patient with me. I have to admit i got it so wrong. You are correct Alic was a widow in 1851, William died between 1841(after the census)-1847. he was deceased at his sons wedding in 1847. Alice was a widow at age 56 born Castor N/Hants. Alice is mentioned on her death cert:as being at Helpston dist of Crowland. On the 1841 census William was at Helpston. Ob; no mention of birth area. I have assumed that all pointed to Helpston for his birth, a lot of his ancestors came from there. All his children were baptised at St Kynesburgha`s Church. William and Alice were marr; at Etton Parish Church in 1817 marr: gives them from Helpston. I was in Helpston a few weeks ago to no avail. I hope i have made things a little clearer. John

The 1841 census, if correct (and you can never be 100% sure of anything from one record), says he wasn't born in Northamptonshire. Helpston is in Northants.
The 1841 census usually rounds down the ages of all adults (those over 15) to the nearest 5 so you might want to check the Helpston burial records to obtain William's more exact age from his burial (after all Alice's age on the 1841 census was 35 and in 1851 it was 56).
On the 1851 census in Helpston there were 15 Lilleys. Ignoring wives the oldest Lilley present in the village was John aged 46 and born Haddon Huntingdonshire (age confirmed on 1861 census). He was a railway labourer. The oldest child present with John and his wife Mary aged 40 and born Helpstone was John aged 21 and born in Helpstone (though I can't find the family on the 1841 census).
There is no indication this family was related to William but John was another Lilley in the same village and he like William (possibly) was not born Northants so he could be connected or just a coincidence and there are plenty of them in family history research particularly when the surname is not rare.
Certainly there are Lilley baptisms in Haddon - again doesn't prove they are connected to your William but they might warrant more investigation (depending on William's age on burial), as might John Lilley, however this William baptised in Haddon looks to be to young if baptised as a baby and there is no reason to suspect he wasn't.
LILLIE, William Christening Date:22 Mar 1801 Haddon, Huntingdonshire Father:John LILLIE Mother:Ann
LILLY, John Christening Date:24 Feb 1805 Haddon, Huntingdonshire Father:John LILLY Mother:Ann
10 children in all baptised with parents John and Ann.
If Haddon is a dead end it might be still worth checking that area of Huntingdon parishes that 'stick out' into Northamptonshire , between Haddon and bordering with Castor in Northants for possible William Lilley baptisms and also adjacent Lincolnshire parishes to Helpston on the west. Cambridgeshire is slightly further away but also may be a possible origin county. Even if you find a William Lilley baptism/s of the right period proving it could be the right one may be difficult but at least you will have a baptism and hopefully siblings that you can research to try to prove a connection.
Regards
Valda

Dear Valda, You have been terrific in trying to help me. I will take your advice, i am going to my friends house in Bedford in Aug this year and will visit Peterborough archives and Sus out all the near by parishes. I may have a bit of luck as this is the only way. If you come across anything in the mean time please let me know. A very grateful John

Quite a difference in age between the gravestone in 1846 and the age given on the census of 1841? If there is a gravestone then the family had sufficient money to buy one. It might be worth checking with Northamptonshire Record Office to see whether this William Lilley (Lilley on the death registration) left a will.

Valda

jennifer You could be right about William Lilly on the Helpston memorial insciptions, that could be Williams Father he would be have been 19 when William was born in 1796. Any possibility of following that up for me please. John

Peterborough Library has quite a bit of local information, and local records in their local history room - they might be able to help. They have records for Northamptonshire - Helpston comes under this area at that time. Petebrough also has a family history society and someone may offer to help if you contact them - the library will give you contact details. Hope you find what you are looking for. Kind regards willow154
