Milton under Wychwood
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 12:02 GMT (UK) »

I am new to this site and I was wondering if there is anybody that can help me.
My ancestors have the CASTLE surname and originated from MILTON UNDER WYCHWOOD, OXFORDSHIRE and I am trying to find information regarding them.
The furthest I can go back is PAUL CASTLE (1760) who married ANN PERKINS (1765) in 1788. I do have their childrens names but cannot find out who they married etc. If possible I would like to find out whose Paul's parents names and anything previous to that.

Thanks

Hi Dot - Welcome to Rootschat ,  I have a copy of the Oxfordshire marriage index by male surnames, if you would like to list any sons they had (with baptism dates) I can look and see if there are any likely marriages for you

Debbie
Thanks for replying.
Paul Castle & Ann Perkins male children were:
Thomas (1789) William (1790) Richard (1794) who married Charlotte Camplin (1790). They also had 4 daughters. Ann, Mary, Bina, Charlotte.
Is there anyway you could find out the name of Pauls parents please?
Thanks very much

Hi Dot

Some bits I have found for you

Thomas Castle born 1789 Milton

possible marriage at Shipton under Wychwood 1811 July 6th
Thomas Castle to Elizabeth Miles or Mills

from 1841 census - Glympton  Oxfordshire

Thomas Castle  1789 Ag Lab
Elizabeth Castle  1789
Ann Castle  1815
Caroline Castle  1818
Hannath Castle  1821
George Castle  1826
Sarah Castle  1828

All born in County

In 1851 this Thomas gives Milton as his birthplace -
but only an initial for the first name of other family members

from 1851 Glympton Oxfordshire
Thomas Castle 63 Head Ag Lab born Milton
E Castle 63  wife born Milton
G Castle 26  son Ag Lab born Glympton
H Castle 21  son's wife glover born Glympton
H Castle 29  daughter born Glympton
E Castle 6 Mo  grandaughter born Glymton

Possible marriage for William born 1790 from Shipton under Wychwood
1814 May 9th to Sarah Wiggins

As to Pauls parents - Milton comes into the parish of Shipton under Wychwood and I am afraid I don't have transcripts for those registers (yet) it is not covered by the IGI so without the registers it is not possible to say.
There is a marriage in the index 1759 October 12th at Shipton under Wychwood for Thomas Castle of Milton to Sebinah Eltam of Milton, which given the names of Pauls children looks possible but without the registers this is just a guess

There is another marriage in the index which cought my eye
1822 Dec 23rd at Shipton of Paul Castle widower to Sarah Burson
I don't know if it is your Paul but it is probably connected

Perhaps someone else on here will have a copy of the registers - sorry its the best I can do

Hi me again  -  good news I was lieing before

not intentionally, I realised I must have the registers as I remember useing them before so I had a good tidy up and found the disk with them on     Grin

from the baptisms Shipton Under Wychwood (1750 start) for surname CASTLE

1751 Sept 1 Thomas s/o Thomas
1756 Jan 6th Ann d/o Thomas
1759 Nov 26 Richard s/o Thomas
1760 Aug 11th Richard s/o Thomas
1761 August 30th Betty d/o Thomas
1763 July 24th Paul s/o Thomas
1765 Jan 5th Thomas s/o Thomas
1766 Dec 25th Gervise s/o Thomas
1769 Feb 19th Richard s/o Thomas
1770 Oct 21st Sabina d/o Thomas
1772 Oct 5th John s/o Thomas
1774 May 22nd Mary d/o Thomas
1776 Apr 21st William s/o Thomas
1778 June 18th Joseph s/o Thomas
1780 March 12th Hannah d/o Thomas

Not sure if it is all the same Thomas or not the register is not giving any other information - but it looks as though Pauls father was definitely Thomas

Debbie
Thanks very much for the info on Castle. Another favor to ask you.
Is there anyway you can get marriage certificates that far back. I do agree that Thomas is the father of Paul but if I was able to get a cert. that would be great.
Also I wonder, is there anymore info on the Castles that would be beneficial to my search.
Please accept my thanks for all your trouble, its much appreciated.

Hi Dot

I am afraid that you cannot get marriage certificates as such before 1837 (or birth or death for that matter)  there is no other information other than the church registers.  the exact entry for Pauls first marriage says

August 11 Paul Castle of the parish of Milton bachelor (x) to Anne Perkins otp of Milton sp (x)  by banns
witnessed by Stephen Mourby & Robert Wiggins

You may be able to get a certified copied of the actual register from Oxford Records Office - but it will not give you any further information
