Hi Mrs Griff

I saw on one of your other postings that you think he may have been killed between 1879 -1881.  have you tried searching the South African National Archives?  http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl

I see one death notice in the Free State Archive in 1879 and a Will in the Cape Town Archive in 1880 (obviously not the same person)'.

How sure of the date period are you because there are Death Notices in 1883 (1) & 1884 (1) in the Cape Archive and in 1884 there is an application for Employment from one John Roberts in the Pietermatitzburg (Natal) Archive.

Sorry, no knowledge of the passenger records you were looking at.   Sad

Regards
Moira

Thanks Moria for you quick reply , i have narrowed the dates down to between 1884- 1889  , 1884 being the year of the last child being born and his wife remarring in 1889 saying she his a widow, i dont know if you can help anymore ,  his D O B was 1850 his wife was Jane ,and he came from Caernavon Wales , and was giong to work in the Gold Mines,

Hi Mrs Griff

There is only the one reference between those dates and it is in the Cape Town Archive.  The problem with this is that there are no gold mines in the Cape!  The other possibility is that he went to the diamond mines - which are in the Cape.  The third possibility is that this is not his file at all and he may not have had an estate file registered.  The only way to tell is to get a copy of the Death Notice and see if it is him.  If you chose to do this, I recommend that you do it as suggested in the topic under "Obtaining copies of documents from the National Archives" http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,211554.0.html
