If anyone has access to the Ampthill transcript I'd very much appreciate a look up for the following entries to see if there is any added detail - I am trying to establish Richard Gray's occupation - I'm hoping he was a weaver:
- the baptisms of his children on 1 Jan 1662; 26 Dec 1663; 7 Apr 1666; 6 Jul 1668; 10 Jan 1673; and 1 Sep 1678 ; or their burials on 26 Aug 1665 and 12 Jan 1672.
and
Burials: Richard GRAY 25 Dec 1677 and 2 Oct 1701 - any detail gratefully received
His wife was Ellen
I'm trying to prove that this Ampthill family moved to Southill and Northill
Many thanks in advance
David

David,
I'm not just 'anyone', I am 'someone' .... better than 'no-one'
None of those baptisms or burials revealed a trade that was a weaver. Sometimes the entries were spelt GRAYE.
The burial of 12 Jan 1672, was for Frances daughter of Jeremy & Eliz Gray; so is not the Frances daughter of Richard, baptised on 6 July 1668. There is a later burial on 10 Jan 1683 of Frances daughter of Rich Gray.
The burial on 2 Oct 1771 is of Rich Gray, son of Rich Gray, tailor. There was another burial on 5 Oct 1771 of Mary Gray, daughter of Rich Gray, tailor. These were twins, baptised on 29 Sept 1771, son & daughter of Rich & Mary Gray, tailor.
If you want a weaver; there is baptism on 14 April 1704 of Sam son of Enoch & Mary Gray, weaver.
Regards John

Apologies John, I wasn't implying for a moment that you were just anyone!
Thanks very much for checking out the Grays which are certainly a grey area for me.
Your reference to the 1771 Richard and Mary had me confused (doesn't take much these days, particularly after a verre ou deux of the local excellent hooch). OK cracked it. Your iniative test almost got me, but I now see it was 1701, not 1771!
Whilst your findings don't support my theory they don't blow it out of the water either. It would be nice to think that Enoch the weaver was part of the same family, but it seems that he may have come from Hitchin, or at least that's the only one anything like near to Ampthill, but I can't find a burial for him either. More work needed, but it does give me a different line of attack. Weaver/tailor, both connected with cloth, perhaps the family had a vertical business model!
The mother of the baptisms you looked at was Ellen. The only Ellen Gray buried in Beds was at Northill, and the names of three of the four surviving sons appeared in Southill/Northill at the right time, and one was a weaver.
Lots more work still required
Thanks again
David

Hi David....
Just to butt in with another one for you but there is also a Sam/Samuel who is a Tailor in Amptill at this time. Jeremy was a carpenter. Christopher a labourer and also an Edward floating around the same dates but could not see occupation for him.
Richard Gray marries Mary Burgis in 1691.
Also to add Richard son of Richard ,gardener burial Dec6 1724.
Oh well may be of no help but who knows.....

Thanks Tazzie. There were a lot of Grays in Ampthill by the look of it, and quite a few of them were named Richard. One of these days I'll try to piece them together to see if they make any sense of my Richard who I think was the one who was buried in 1677.
All the best
David
