Hello Lynne Did Mary marry a David Smith? (Poor you Taylors and Smiths!). If so, I see that the William Taylor bc 1850 in Essex has a place of birth Orsett in the 1861 census. I wondered if William b 1825 might have come from there. In the 1841 census there is a William Taylor of the right age in Orsett - but not living with his family. However there is a Taylor family group in Orsett and the children's names include Benjamin and Allfred! Seems a bit of a coincidence. I will transcribe the details for you if you think this is a possibility. Barbara

Hello Lynne
Orsett William Taylor 15 Labourer? Y
The writing is difficult and he seems to be with a random set of people. Ref is HO107/322/24 f 18 - perhaps someone else will take a look and see what they make of it.
Orsett HO107/322/24 f 17 William Taylor 50 Ag lab Charlotte 35 Benjamin 13 Eliza 10 Alfred 4 Charlotte 1 Charles Emmery 1 All born in County
In the absence of a marriage certificate for William and Mary Topping this could be a reasonable starting point. I think you will need to access the Orsett PRs next - unfortunately they do not seem to be on the IGI for the period you need.
Perhaps you could also check BMD indexes to establish whether there might have been a family reason for William and Mary to have been in Essex for the birth of their son Willliam in 1850.

Hi again Lynne
Thought you might like this from the 1851 census
Orsett Charlotte Taylor Head Wid 48 b Essex Prittlewell Alfred Son 13 Scholar b Essex Orsett Charlotte Dau 10 Scholar b Essex Orsett
Ref HO107 1773 f 333
The only other Taylors shown as born in Orsett (anywhere in England) are the wife and 2 daughters of a Henry Taylor who was born in Chadwell Essex.
So your William is still in the frame. We do need to find his marriage though.
Barbara

Hello Lynne I did notice on Free BMD that there is a marriage in Carlisle Dec 1845 of a Mary Topping. Also there are only 7 people listed - so one marriage partner has yet to be transcribed. It seemed a good possibility as William and Mary's eldest child was born there. However I could not see a corresponding William Taylor on the full marriage indexes - you may want to double check.
