Crosby Ravensworth Land Tax - Kersey
« on: Monday 16 April 07 11:13 BST (UK) »

Judy
You asked about Kersey entries in the CR land tax records.

For 1765:
Maulds Meaburn: Widw Kersey assessed at 6s 8d
CR and Reagill: nothing

For 1809:
CR and MM: nothing

Thank you Deborah.

Yes, Widw Kersey is one of mine.  At least it gives me some idea of when she died - or at least what date she was alive and an approximate location. I can look up her death in Maulds Meaburn parish - or does that come under Morland.

Was 6s 8d an average sum to pay?

What exactly was the Land Tax? Was it for people who owned land or farmed land or both?

HI Deborah,

It is me again!
Do you by any chance have Land Tax Indexes  for Colby or Bolton?

If so are there any Kerseys or Hanson's for either of those.

Thanks

Judy
There is an Elizabeth Kersey of Meaburn widow aged 76 who was buried in CR on 25 Feb 1774.

Maulds Meaburn is in CR - Kings Meaburn is in Morland.

An assessment of 6/8 is at the cheaper end but not the cheapest by any means.  However, there is no indication of what the assessment is for.

I only have land taxes for CR - sorry.
