SS Solent ?
« on: Monday 16 April 07 11:57 UTC (UK) »

Can anybody do anything with this photo (how do I reduce the size from 1.2MB to 500KB?). I think it's the Solent about 1894-1898. My great grandfather was William James Smith, sometime Captain with the RMSP in Barbados. He I think is seated 2nd from left of this picture. I'd be interested if someone can identify the ship and/or colourize the photo.

Yes, very humorous me hearties! How do I reduce the size of the image? Apparently I cannot post anything larger than 500Kb. The image is 1.2MB

Turns out the ship is the Royal Mail Steam Packet's Solent, built in 1878 and plying the mail trade in the West Indies c.1890s.

Anyone have any info on said vessel, crew lists etc?
