When did she die? What was her age at that time on the death cert? She would possibly have had to produce proof of her age when she was 60 to draw her OAP so some document must exist somewhere
Another thought - although known as Mabel - did she possibly have another christian name (eg) Margaret Mabel

Hello, Been down that route as far as is possible. She died in 2005. The informant was her second husband accompanied by my daughter and son-in-law (her grandson) who gave the Registrar both her marriage certs as proof of age, and this was accepted. According to her husband, the marriage certs (I have copies) were also eventually accepted by the powers that be when she claimed her part of his pension in 1988, as a birth cert could not be found. This is information direct from him, and at 84 and very frail, I can hardly harrass him further for knowledge that he obviously does not have. Mabel never claimed a pension in her own right, and had no life insurances. Her pet name was Kitty but I have been down that route too. As she worked all her life in Nursing Homes, she was obviously issued at some stage with an Insurance number, National Health number, etc., but this info is covered by the Privacy Acts for at least another 25 years. We suspect that her parents were Frederick John Watts 1881 and Annie Rosina Wareham who married in 1904 in Beaminster (marr cert) but the Dorset OPC has yet to publish baptisms of this later period, so we are stuck. Thanks for your interest, anyway. Regards Vicwinann

Hello I don't know if I can help yet in your search for Mabel but my Great Grandmother (My maternal Grandfather's Mum) was Alice Maud Watts and she was born in Beaminster in 1875, so they were probably related in some way or another. I haven't done a lot of research into the Watts family yet but I will check through my paperwork and see if there are any references to her there. Also I am due to go back to Dorchester for another visit soon (I live about 200 miles away so I can't go as often as I would like!), and I will gladly include her in my research and see if I can uncover anything. Meanwhile it might be an idea to check the registers for Netherbury (you can do that through the OPC) as I have found quite a few of Alice's relatives there and it is a village just a couple of miles from Beaminster. Keep me posted on anything you find out and I'll keep in touch too. I am happy for you to have my e mail address but I have only just joined RootsChat so I don't know how to go about it yet. All the best. Joan

From the September quarter of 1911 - mothers maiden names are shown alongside the entry so you could look for a Watts birth with a mothers maiden name of Wareham (unless you already have)

Frederick John & Annie Rosina Watts had a son Frederick John born circa 1902. Could he be Mabel's father rather than the Frederick John who married Annie? I don't have a marriage for him until he married Evelyn Bugler in Beaminster on 21/8/1937, but this could have been his second marriage, or perhaps Mabel was born out of wedlock? Other children of Frederick John & Annie Rosina are Frances Mary baptised 16/6/1912, Florence Ethel baptised 4/4/1914 and Herbert born c 1917 who married Florence May Maggs on 13/1/1940. (All of the above in Beaminster) If one of the girls had a baby before marriage it might have been brought up by her parents as their own but that would have been nearer 1930 than 1920 for the birth? A bit more food for thought anyway. Joan

Hello Joan A, Allibaker and Carole W,
Joan, I will send you a private message with my email address. To send PMs, just click on the green television icon below the persons name. I will also have a look on the OPC for Netherbury.
Thank you Carole. We have searched quarter by quarter the National Birth Registration lists on Ancestry and haven't found anything obvious between 1915 and 1925.
We do think that Frederick John Watts chr 1879 and Annie Rosina who married 4th July 1904 (marr cert) are linked but did not know about a son Frederick b abt 1902!
If Frederick junior was married twice he would show as widow or some such on his marriage to Evelyn Bugler in 1937, when he would have been about 35years old.
Yes, Joan, illegitimacy and being brought up by grandparents is something that we suspect may have happened, Mabel herself perhaps never having been told. That is why it is so important to find her birth cert or a baptism.
Thanks to everyone for their interest. The search goes on. Regards Vicwinann
