Hi can anyone help me with this it is really annoying me,I have gone back too 1701 to Hugh Muir and Janet Barr[u][/u] something doesn't seem right on the igi it brings up 2 Hugh Muir's born "1701" one married to Janet Barr "1747 "in kilmarnock he died Nov 1781 this Janet was 20 years younger than Hugh , she was born 1723 they had 7 of a family.this was fine until i tried going further back with Hugh to find his father,on the same page as his marriage to Janet there appears to be another Hugh Muir b" 1701 "also died Nov 1781 [u]but was married to an  [color=Red]Isabel hendry married in  kilmarnock 1730[/color] [/u]  this Isabel died 24th June 1747 , the same year as the other one married they had a son Hugh b 1740.on Hugh Muir and Janet barr's marriage certificate it says's this first marriage for both ?? help could it be a mistake or was Hugh Muir married twice ??

Hi katrina,

The IGI - which is not complete - contains records which have been extracted from the parish records and are considered to be fairly reliable, although there can be errors in transcription. 

BUT it also contains records submitted by members of the LDS church.  Some of these are at best "guesstimates."

The two records that you have found are both submitted and therefore should be treated with caution.  If at all possible, go the the original parish records.  In this case they should be available on ScotlandsPeople (pay per view site here: http://www.scotlandspeople.gove.uk )  If he was baptised in the Church of Scotland in Kilmarnock then the records go back far enough that it might be there.  If he was baptised in another parish, finding which one may be difficult.

An alternative for viewing the parish records is to visit an LDS Family History Centre and order the film of the parish records to view there.  A small fee would be payable.

I can't find a Hugh Muir baptised in Kilmarnock at that time, but there is one in Mauchline:

Hugh Muir son of James Muir baptised 10 Jan 1703.

The name is not uncommon in Ayr at this time - someone may have drawn the wrong conclusions from the information.

that would make sense,as the naming pattern in my family seems to be hugh,james and john,will try and see if i can find anything out about hugh from mauchline son of James muir x
