Hi everyone,
I would be pleased to receive anyone's view onthe following:
My husband's Grandfather - Arthur Gummerson born in 1870 in Knottingley, Yorkshire, is found on the 1891 census in Alyesbury Goal - convict. on the 1881 census he is living with his Father John Gummerson and his Step-Mother Mary Gummerson, and half Bro. James in Ipswich (Mary came from Ipswich) are there any records, how do I find out what he was in Goal for, or anything would help

Hi Caz
If you look at this website, Buckinghamshire council has details of Aylesbury Gaol, and some prisoners' records from 19th century, if your relative isn't in the list, you could email them for more information http://apps.buckscc.gov.uk/eforms/libPrisoners/index.aspx

I was at the RO today and saw, by chance, a list of incoming prisoners to Aylesbury Jail. I am sure it was from the mid 19th c to the early 20th C. I can have a quick look tomorrow if you would like.
Incidentally it is still standing today and is the home to long term young offenders 17 to 21. So pretty serious offenders held there these days.
If you google Aylesbury prison, you will see a picture. Or the Aylesbury workhouse shows a great picture as it was directly across the road.

Hi there,
I would really appreciate it if you could look.
On the 1891 census it says he is 21 yrs old. so I do not know when he went to goal, I have been on the web site for the goal and printed the picture, but now I will have a look at the other one as well. This man was married twice and his very last child Ethel born 1916 is my Mother in law 91 this year, and insists it cannot be her Father, he never told them, but they did not in those days. so I would love to find more info on hi.
thanks again
Caz

This is very weird. The list held at the RO is just for 1871. So I went into the archives part and looked at what was available. Mostly 20c stuff I must say but what is strange is that it says the prison was closed c 1890 and reopened as a womens prison. They obviously didn't get the dates right as it is only men in April 1891 on the census.
There was a list and details of inmates 1891 to 1901. So they went and obtained this for me to check over. It started August 9th 1891 and was just women. No men at all. I only just nipped in the RO today but I did notice the notes about 1891 in a different volume so I can have a look and see if there are any notes on what happened to the men prisoners after it was closed???

Hi Jo,
thanks for looking today, the only thing I can add is that Arthur was back in Knottingley, Yorkshire living with a woman who had a child to him in 1895. The census for 1891 as you probably know was 5th April. He must have told them he was 21 because that is what is says on the census, but he was born August 1868 (I have his birth cert) but he put 31 on the next census and again on his marriage cert to the 2nd woman he lived with. He is in Ipswich in 1881 and that says he is 11, perhaps his Father forgot how old he was. and possibly his Step Mother did not care.
I would be so grateful if you could find out anything else.

There do appear to have any records pre August 1891 except for Entries relating to the personal circumstances offence and sentence 1870 to 1878. There are loads of notes about the build of the prison in 1840.
The only other option is to check all the quarter sessions prior to April 1891. This would be a long trek. It would be useful just to know what type of prisoners were held there as it woud appear in the arly years part of it was a debtors prison.
Sorry I can't be of help. But let me know if come up with anything.

HI
thanks so much for looking for me, I have an idea the records may be at the National Archive, pity, my Mother in law aged 90 is adamant it is not her Father, and I know it is, she says he never told her Mother, but he would not would he, 'will you marry me I am an ex convict' I dont think so.I just hope she lives long enough for me to find out (I dont mean to sound awful.........) again thanks so much for looking

Jo
as on the other look up where I mentioned it, it would be more profitable and easier to check the calendar of prisoners at Buckinghamshire RO than quarter sessions or prison records for details on this man.
Regards
