Ward/Hawkins
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 15:41 BST (UK) »

Hi
My ancestor was a Richard Ward - but who he was and where he came from has illuded me. I have found a Richard Ward who married Elizabeth Hawkins in 1761 in Puloxhill. The bit that niggles is my Richard Ward named his son Arthur Hawkins.  The chances that it was his mother's or grandmother's surname springs to mind. Could someone be able to tell me if Richard Ward and Elizabeth Hawkins had any children. A very tall order I know - but no harm in trying.
Thanks

Could their children have been born in Dunton?  I know its about 18 miles away according to multimap but do you know if they moved there.  There is a Richard Ward and an Elizabeth there who had five children all christened in Dunton, as follows:-

Ann christened 28 Mar 1762
John Christened 18 Mar 1764
Edmund christened 10 May 1767
Richard Christened 26 July 1773
William Christened 7 Apr 1776

Not sure if these are yours or not.  Regards, mygenes

Thank you very much indeed. Datewise my Richard would have to be the son of either John or Edmund, who could then have named their son Richard after their father. Clutching at straws springs to mind. I shall have to check them out and see who they married etc.
Thanks again

Virtually all of Beds pre 1812 has been extracted onto the IGI at www.familysearch.org. In the father and mother boxes just insert Richard Ward and Elizabeth, and Beds at the bottom. That will throw up them all. The problem with mygenes' Dunton family is that there was an additional child, Elizabeth, christened on 13 Apr 1760 ie before the Pulloxhill marriage. There's also a Richard Ward/Elizabeth marriage in 1757 at Edworth which is a mile or so from Dunton, so I think that family can probably be ruled out.

But there's no sign of any children to the Pulloxhill couple

When and where was Arthur Hawkins Ward baptised, and do you have his parents' marriage?

In London, David, in 1832. His father Richard Ward was born in 1795 - but "where" is the question. I am going to London next week and so want to try and get as much info as I can to be able to route around. Arthur was an only child as Richard who married and was widowed and then married again in 1832, died in 1839.
Thanks for coming back

Hello Valan,

The marriage at Pulloxhill on 3 Jan 1761 of Richard Ward & Eliz Hawkins said he came from Barton.

So looking thru the Barton PR for baptisms I see these children of Wm & Ann Ward

7 May 1738 William
13 Apr 1740 Richard
2 May 1742 Ann
26 Mar 1744 John
24 Nov 1745 Eliz

There is also marriage at Barton on 18 Feb 1736 of William Ward to Ann Crofts

Regards John
