William Adams: Neithrop
« on: Tuesday 24 April 07 17:33 BST (UK) »

I looks as though the family of William Adams who married Mary Ann Hunt in Horley in 1812, is that shown in the 1841 census, living in Crown Yard Banbury and in the 1861 census living at Boxhedges Neithrop. He was a wheelwright. The 1861 census says William was born in Neithrop about 1790. He had lived in Horley where he married and where his eldest son was born, before moving back to Banbury.

I know Neithrop is a part of Banbury. Does it ,or did it have its own parish church, and if not, where would children born in Neithrop around 1800 be baptised? Neithrop does not appear in the list of parish batch numbers in the IGI.

Hi Eric

I believe Neithrop only has baptisms for 1853 to 1861, marriages 1900-1938.  Earlier and later baptisms/marriages are recorded in the registers of Banbury St. Mary.  There are  no burial registers for Neithrop.

Many thanks Myfi.
I see the registers for Banbury St Mary are on the IGI, and a quick look shows quite a lot of Adams baptisms. I shall now spend a pleasant evening trying to reconstruct the families from the marriage and baptism entries!!!! Might be a late night!!!!
Thanks again and best wishes,
Eric

Hi Myfi
Its taken 2 evenings so far and its not finished!!!! The Banbury St Mary registers up to about 1730 only give the father's name. A William Adams is given as the father for 18 baptisms between 1677 and 1711, almost all at the "regulation" 2 year gap!!!!! There is a marriage of a William and Aime Bull in 1701, so most of the last 7 could be their children, but I didn't find a marriage of William Adams around 1675. I suppose he could have married in his wife's parish, so more searching needed.
Thanks for your help in the last week

best wishes

Hi Myfi,

Thanks for the reply. It makes me realise how difficult and sad the lives of people were, to have so many children dying so young.

I think I  have sorted out the family back to Samuel Adams who married Mary Welford at Banbury St Mary in 1740, but I can't find a birth or baptism of Samuel. He would have been born about 1715 I reckon. Could I ask you if the parish registers say any more about Samuel when he married on 15 May 1740, or mention a baptism about 1715. The only family having children about that time were William (jun) and Aime but the father died in 1711.

I have filled in the burial details on the families of William sen & jun.
How sad to have buried two daughters called Mary within 4 months. The son William I have would have been 20 in 1700. I don't know whether they would have given his parents at that age. Perhaps the brackets mean that the parish clerk couldn't remember the deceased name!!!!!.
I don't have a baptism of a Mary, daughter of William Jun.between 1701 and 1703.

Thanks again for your interest and help

Sorry Myfi,
Hadn't got my eyes open. Have just seen  that you had given me the baptism of Mary in 1703, in your last e-mail.

Hi Eric

Sorry, but no sign of a baptism for Samuel c. 1715...I looked from 1710 to 1723

The marriage entry doesn't give much I'm afraid

15 May 1740  ADAMS Samuel, b., & WELLFORD Mary, sp., both of B.

re the burial. entry for 1700...I, like you, thought it might have been a case of the clerk not making a note of the deceased child's name.

Seems strange that the entry for the bapt of Mary 1703 isn't on the IGI......but here it is
ADAMS Mary 4th Oct. 1703 d. William jnr.
