William Shawcross Gorton parish
« on: Tuesday 31 May 05 10:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi does anyone have acess to parish registers for Gorton, Manchester. My gtgtgtgt granfather was born in 1818 in Gorton. I beleive the Parish church was St James?
I was wondering if he could be in there. His name was William Shawcross, father Willam
I was alsso wondering where would someone dying in Openshaw in the 1890s , protestant , be usally buried? regards Michael Smiley

Manchester has an online search facility for some of their cemeteries at
http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/RegEnq.asp
The records are not complete - there are details on the site of coverage. The search is free, but if you want plot references/details of who else in grave etc there is a fee Sad

This is an extract from the Shawcross book published 1908. Hope its of some help.  If you want to send more information, ie. wife or children of William, I'll have a look and see if there is anything else more relevant.

Hi Mike - there's a thread somewhere that has some pictures of the chapel at Phillips Park there (awful state) - I'll try & find the link for you. The cemetery is now "full" - no new graves, just burials in existing plots so maintenance is not good to understate the case. Quite a few graves have no stone and many have been toppled (forward so you can't read them) for "safety reasons".
Manchester Central Library has some records for the cemetery
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/Libraries/arls/famhist.htm
you may find someone is going there who can do a lookup for you, otherwise it is the chargeable online service.
Just found that link with the pictures

Hi mike, happy to hear you found out where some are buried. It's ashame about the state of Philips park. we have family there, and we know that a headstone was paid for but we can't find it. So many of the headstones are broken , some by vandalism some have fallen over or have been laid flat so as not to fall or hurt any one. I think it would be worth you paying at the manchester site to view the records of the grave, as it will also tell you who ells is in that grave. Poss other family members? and who paid for the grave?  Shame you don't have any family buried in Tameside, because theres are free to view on line (link below) and give quite a bit of infomation. If you do get the grave number we might be over that side of town some time and take a picture for you, all been that they still have their headstones? I have also posted a map/plane of philips park for you, not the best but only one i have. Hope some of this helps in some way

Hi Mike

Philips Park seems to be turning into my second home  Wink I was there twice last week grave hunting.

It is a crying shame the state it is in. I see mshrmh found the chapel photos.

If you get a grave number I will try to find it for you, but some areas have had all headstones removed mainly running along the bank of the river.

Regards
Ken
