Hi,

I am having trouble running GED2WWW, I run it and it asks for the Gedcom File Name, I enter it "database" and it says "The filename you entered (database) was not found. Please try another filename:". I can not go any further. I am running Windows XP and its GED2WWW version 0.31. in the main folder I have a folder called "html", a file called "copying", a file called "GED2WWW", a file called "history" and my gedcom file called "database". Please Help. Thank You.

Regards,

Gordon.

Hi Gordon

Is this the old Windows problem (you don't really want to see the name of your files, so I [Windows] will hide half of it).?

Go to My Computer and navigate to your main folder.

I'm doing this from memory so apologies up front.

On the Menu bar at the top of the window is "View", click on that and a list of options will appear, one of them is Folder Options.

click on that and a new window appears, You are looking for an option which says (something like) hide extensions of known filetypes.

You should deselect this option. Click on Apply and close.

Your files in your directory should now have a dot and three or more letters after them. If not try refreshing or navigating to another directory and back again.

ie "database.ged"

That is the filename you have to enter when asked.

You are then entitled to join the IHBG Club.

Thanks for that, It works now.

Do you know what the other settings are, It asks " what extension do you want to use for the pages produced 1.. .htm 2.. .html" & "Enter the filename for the base page."

Thanks Again,

Gordon.

Hi Gordon

Glad to hear you are making progress.

I do not know the WWWGED system that you are using.

But, your first question is easy.

It doesn't matter whether your pages have the .htm extension or the .html extension.

They are both recognised as html files by the server (Rootschat) and the browsers IE, Firefox, Opera et al.

Whichever extension you pick you should always use, because the computers will recogise filename.htm and filename.html as two separate and different files. You could end up with twice as many files as you should.

For your second question the answer is "That depends!"

Does WWWGED create webpages on your pc which you then upload, or does it create webpages on the fly using the gedcom file as its source of information ?

My guess is that it does the first. simply because it is asking about .htm or .html files.

That being the case, WWWGED will generate .htm(l) files from your gedcom file and put them in the html directory (guessing).

You would then need to ftp the contents of the html directory to your base directory on Rootschat.

And you should then be up and running.

I've just downloaded this program to have a look at it.  It is a pretty old program using a DOS setup screen where you specify your criteria.  It outputs all the webpages in a folder called HTML which contains lots of dat.htm and idx.htm files.  The main or index file is surname.htm.

Gordan, you already have a website which provides a link to your tree on the familytreemaker website, so I assume you are trying to provide an alternative to the FTM site tree?

You would have to upload the whole of the HTML folder.  You would then have to put a link on your main menu e.g.

<a href="/HTML/beaney.htm"> My family Tree

You would need to make changes to your beaney.htm file and insert this bit of code in the HEAD section:

<base href="http://rootschat.com.beaney/HTML/">

That is because the ged2www people designed the code to output files that would be in the root directory of your site, whereas your pages will be in a subfolder of the root directory.  If you do not make that change then people will get a "page not found" message when they click on links on the beaney.htm main page.

My main criticism of this ged2www software is that it does not include the notes section of the gedcom file.  If you do want your notes to be display then try using PAF (Personal Ancestry File) from http://www.familysearch.org/ as it too can convert a GEDCOM into simple webpages but it includes the notes section as well.  As this software is free you may want to compare its output to ged2www before you commit yourself to ged2www.

Hi Gordon

Another programme that is free but has an upgrade option is GedHTree that both Soocat & I have used to display tree info on our sites.

See this link for a bit more about our journey.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,228167.0.html

The GedHTree programme can be used alone, or incorporated into other website building programmes - and can be downloaded from here. www.gedhtree.com

I have put a quick tree using GedHTree on my site if you want to have a look at it.
