We have a death certificate from 1891 which we cannot decipher. We want to know the cause of death but the writing is faded and even with enlargement is still unreadable. Do any of your clever people have any ideas as to how we can improve this? Very grateful for any help, Regards, Abiam

Hi Abiam,
Do try inverting the colours--it will show black background and white writing instead.
Hope it can help you to read it slightly better.
Or you can ring the local register office to ask if they could kindly read the cause of death to you after you gave all the details just to show that you do know this person. I am sure they will be more than happy to accommodate with your request.
Kind regards,
Tees

Thanks for that - I'll try it before I try ringing them. I know these people are doing a great job to help us tree searchers but it does seem rather unfair to pay seven pounds for something unreadable.
Does anyone think that maybe a category system would be fairer? ie. A) Perfectly clear B) Readable C) Poor and then the purchaser could decide whether or not to proceed.
Any thoughts? Regards, Abiam

Hi
You may have used a file name for your document that someone else on RootsChat has used already. Try renaming your document/file and post it again.
Good luck!
Cheers Koromo

Hi Koromo, Trying again!
(*) Moderator Comment: Sorry, but I've tried resizing the image, and it it really is impossible to make out anything. Try for a better copy, as suggested above

LOL! That is seriously illegible!
Could you scan the cause of death section at a higher resolution, eg. 600 dpi and post it with yet another different filename? (I'd recommend that you don't attempt to enlarge it or tweak it in anyway.) There might be enough detail to see something.
Cheers Koromo

Its been a while since you posted this message, however, I recently received a copy of an English Death Certificate where I could not read the Cause of Death due to the faintness of the copy. Living in Australia, I could not ring GRO, so I emailed them quoting the references of the Death Certificate and informing them that the quality of the copy was so poor I could not read the Cause of Death. I requested could they read the original certificate to see if that was any better? They replied shortly thereafter indicating that they had read the original, and gave me the cause of the death. With the reply they also attached an enlarged version of the original cause of death.
You could try that option?
Regards
Les
