Bedford death cert.
« on: Friday 27 April 07 14:21 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Am I having a senior moment........
I have the death cert of my G.G.G. Grandmother died 27/12/1855 in Bedford Workhouse. it is a copy I sent for in 2003 from Bedford Register office.
I would like to send to the G.R.O. for the copy that is an actual copy not hand written by Bedford Register offce.
I have looked on Free BMD and Ancestry for the Volume and Page number and it keeps saying cannot be found. and I need then to be able to order online from G.R.O.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong.

Hello, Caz,

Give us the details of your 3 X gr gandmother, ie  full name & age at death etc. , maybe  a search by new eyes may help.

I see that that actual date of death is the 27th of Dec 1855.   Are you only looking at the death index entries for the Dec ¼ of that year. ?    Have you looked at the indexes for the Mar ¼ 1856 ?   As the death was so close to end of 1855 it is more than likely it was not reg'd until the following quarter i e Mar 1856.

Dec 1855

Ellen Simmons:  Bedford 3b 207 is how I read it (but unfortunately the volume and page numbers are very hard to read).

Ancestry complete undexes entry is difficult to read as HTH has said but I can confirm, from the find my past entry which is much clearer, that it is 6d 207

But the certificate held by the GRO won't be the original certificate - that will still be held by Bedford Register Office. At the end of each quarter the Register Office transcribes the certificates onto another register and forwards the transcribed copy to the GRO. That's why the GRO and local register office details sometimes don't tally if there was a transcription error.

So instead of getting a modern transcription by Bedford Register Office, you're getting a copy of an 1855 transcription by Bedford Register Office. "Looks" more authentic, but it's still a transcription!

Is there any chance of Bedford giving you a copy, rather than a transcription, of the certificate?

Hi
thank you so much for that information.

before I replied to you I have rung Bedford Register office, and they were under the impression also that GRO sent out copies of the originals, she checked with her Superintendant and you are absolutely correct.  she also said that Bedford do not have the microfiche facility to copy them. So will now stick to the typed ones, I was going to send for four, so thank you for saving me £28.

Glad I caught you before you banged in the online order (glad also that Bedford, eventually, agreed with me!  I'm amazed though that the Register Office itself wasn't aware of their own procedures)

Hi David,
what made it worse, was the lady said she and her friend did family research.
also I was just filling in the boxes on the GRO website when your email came through and I thought keep going place the order then look, sense prevailed, and I trashed them off.

again thanks

Just a point, Caz,  findmypast is a pay to view site, you can purchase as small or large a number of credits as you wish.  I use them as a backup & check up if I can't read any feint entries anywhere else.     What is useful in their census records, you can look up by address as well as surname.

Hi

I had a look after your message, I have registered, I do not mind spending money if all the free sites do not give me the answers,  I dare not add up how much the research has cost over the years, but once you start with family history, the bug bites hard and will not let go.

Yes, Caz,

I have been researching my family lines for well over 20 years  & have a huge database with 2 of the lines going back 15 generations & everything has been documented with copies of bapts., certs, wills, census. I dare not try to count the cost of it all, not only the hard copies but the travelling involved in getting round to the various London ROs before the days of online records.   And as for the mistakes ( certs etc) & red herrings all paid for, well, we don't mention those.  That is one of the things I felt srongly abou the various Fam. Hist. TV progs, it all looked so easy & nobody ever mentioned the cost involved.

But then, I would never have given up doing it, it has given me a great deal of satisfaction & an understanding  of the ups & down of my family thro'the generations.

Keep up the good work,  I only wish there had been a site like Rootschat when I had started with a lot of friendly people only too willing to lend hand or offer advice, as it was I had to work from scratch with no older relatives to ask. Good way to learn tho'.

Cheers,

Meliora
