Charman/Tiberi
« on: Friday 27 April 07 17:12 BST (UK) »
Hi
I need help in locating the family of my mums gt gt aunt in Canada, Alice Wilson she was a home child in 1913 leaving Liverpool for Quebec, she later married George Charman also a home child in Port Hope in 1917 and was widowed in 1918 when George was killed in WW1 she married again the following year to Guillo Tiberi and settled in Montreal where she raised her family, How many children she i had ? i dont know the answer to that, i know she had a baby son to George before he was killed but how many afterwards to Guillio Tiberi i dont know, Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be really appreciated

Thanks alot for taking the time to read this.

Hi Sharon,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Unfortunately your request is tricky, because it is after the 1911 census (the last one available for Canada) and in Quebec, where civil registration of BMDs did not start until 1994 (yes 1994!).  Before that the only records are church records.

But, as a place to start, you might want to check out these Montreal Directories - they have every year up to 1992!

http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html

(Click on either Série principale or Série Criss-Cross on the left hand menu, then select the specific year you want - after that it is all in English.)

For instance, I can see that in 1924/25 Guillo is an assistant engineer living at 59 Britannia.

It will only list the head of household, so you won't get children's names, but with a name like Tiberi they should be easy to spot.  If you start seeing other Tiberi names in later years, these could be older sons, so that might be a clue.

Also, if you see the name suddenly switch from Guillo Toberi to Mrs. Tiberi, then you can guess that Guillo has died and Alice is now the head of household - this could help you pin point Guillo's death.

And, once you find out what part of the city they were in, you might be able to guess at what church they might have gone to and start looking for baptism records of children.  See this article for an explanation of looking for BMD info in Quebec:

http://simmons.b2b2c.ca/attach1.htm

(It's also worth a visit to the author's main page, as you are interested in Montreal.)

Hope this helps!

Hi Sharon,

Not sure if you had this, but here's Guillo's WWI papers

On the second set, he lists Alice as his next of kin, perhaps you could order his full military file and it would have more information for you.

Hi Sharon,

Sounds like you are doing it right.  The street directory is organized by Street, so you would have to know what street you were looking for. The Alphabetical directory section is by surname - that's where I found him in 1924/25.  The entry says

Tiberi Guilio asst eng 59 Britannia

which I interpreted to mean he was an engineer, but I could be wrong.

And yes, Forfar would be the name of the street or road in that case.  They don't seem to ever include St or Rd or anything else.

Here is the link to the database where Karen found his military papers.

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/cef/index-e.html

When you search for him in the database and then click on the icon next to his name in the results list you will get a page that has these documents on it, as well as a link to get instructions on how to order the full file.  It is definitely worth the cost of photocopying.

Thanks Karen
I did'nt have them but i have now so thanks alot im sure they will come in useful along the way.

MJP thanks again think i worked it out but for the french bits ??? any way I seems to have lost him after 1936 but later on found what i assume to be his son Frank, but until i find proof of birth's i wont know who is who, maybe just have to look around forums for someone researching the same family as me, or even a death register for Guillo or Alice i know she lived to a great age of 102 and only passed away in 2000 so maybe an obituary look up.
