Problem with Free Marriage Index
« on: Friday 27 April 07 21:00 BST (UK) »

Hello. I am trying to locate missing spouses on my FH database, where I only have the Christian name of the spouse. I have not done too badly up to now, but have just come across a result where I have 3 Mary Anns on the same page of the registry volume. If I put the known spouse's surname into the search, as offered, I get no results. Does anyone know why this should be?

There could be a couple of answers
Free Indexes are input by volunteers and that record may not have been entered yet.

There could be an omission on the sheet that is worked from.

Was your search for a specific date? If so it may not be correct.

I have found 1st name only search very difficult to prove, for instance if you had found the spouse, how would you then know which was his wife? You would have to order a marriage certficate for everyone on the page and could still be without the correct couple.

The only sure way is to search the parish records, but I am sure others will give you more guidance when they read this posting

As Indaloman says these are done by volunteers, when I was speaking to one she said that when marriages are done the man might be there but not necessarily the woman and vice versa , it depends how the batches  were transcribed.

Thanks for all the input, friends. Sorry about any delay in replying, but I have just arrived home. These are the facts:
Edward Artus married Mary Ann   .....? at Gloucester in 1850, Oct. - Dec. quarter, vol. 11, page 512. If I put in Mary Ann with these details, I get 3 results returned: Mary Ann Collingburn, Mary Ann Cresswell and Mary Ann Waterson, all on page 512, vol. 11.
If I put the spouse's name (Artus) in, then there are no results.
Hope you can help.

FreeBMD offers the choice of entering the spouse's name in the search because the indexes for marriages after 1911 or 1912 - can't remember offhand - do show the spouse's surname.

Up until that year, entering the spouse name in the search won't help:  you can only see all the names of the people whose marriages are entered on that particular page of the original register.  So in 1850 you see the names of four couples, but there is no way from that to tell who married who. You are rather unlucky  to find three Mary Anns all on the same page.

So, either you try to find the marriage on the parish register - sometime the IGI can help you out here - or you send for the certificate, entering only Edward's name on the form.
