Does anyone know if this is still there or can point me in the right direction to a website that would know something more about it?

From my knowledge of Dover pubs, it does not ring any bells. Have you got a street address (or maybe one near it on the Census).

My husband can't remember it either (he might not be old enough though) and it's not on this list -

It appears to have been in Queen Street - a little street off of York Street

I would hope that Dover Library or South East Kent Archives would have some info though - street directories, licenses granted at the quarter sessions perhaps etc.

must admit the picture rings no bells either.  Must be some where between the Britannia and the Nelson.

I am getting the distinct impression that this is the wrong location. The Cause Altered seems to have been named that before 1891, so must conclude that Queen Street is wrong location.

The address i have from the 1891 Census is  4 Queen Street. Dover.

I suppose it's long gone now but i,m having a shuftie about to see if there are any photos that have survived.

I,m just chuffed he is'nt a Ag Lab  lol

just done an update to my orignal post as you posted reply.

4 Queen Street MUST be the Casue Altered then, the site I have given have some good photos. One from 1901 naming a different landlord.

Hiya Adrian,

I've emailed the webmaster at http://www.doverpages.co.uk/causes.htm to see if he knows if this  pub was once " The Ordnance Arms" It does say on the page that it was previously known as Blacksmiths Arms and Carpenters Arms.

Lets just hope he's still around eh?  lol

If I remember correctly the Ordnance Arms became a wet fish shop in 1910. The building isn't there any more but stood on the corner where Chapel Lane entered Queen Street (just down from the Cause Is Altered but on the other side of the road).

I think its address was 10 Queen Street - I lived there until I was three but I didn't know much about house numbers at that time Smiley

The Ordnance Arms was No 4 Queen Street, on the corner of Chapel Place.  It was fully licensed and supplied by Leney's.  As an alehouse up to 1859, it had belonged to Walker's Phoenix Brewery.  Later there were 2 bars: the private bar approached from Queen St and the public from Chapel Place; there was no parlour.  The license changed hands 4 times in 6 years and the authorities were quick to note the fact; redundancy was proved in 1908 and the property continued as a fried fish shop.

The area is now under the York Street bypass!

The Cause is Altered was at the top of Queen Street at no.14.

Last week I went to Dover Library and checked the 1953 edition of Kelly's Directory.

The building that used to be The Ordnance Arms is listed as 10 Queen Street so I can only guess that house numbers had been re-ordered between 1910 and sometime prior to 1953. Certainly there was bomb damage between St. Mary's School and the remaining houses on that side of Queen Street.
