I'm trying to find out what happened to an Emily Shears and who her parents were. She was born on 23 Nov 1876. She appears in my family Bible under the children of David & Martha Lang. But they married in 1881. Martha was born a Bell and lived in the same street as the Shears family. In the 1881 census, Emily Shears was living with her grandparents Charles and Fanny bell, also there son Charles Bell.
I do know Maria Bell married Charles Shears, and was in a lunatic asylum in 1881, so it could have been her child. But that doesn't make sense to why she would appear in my family Bible. I'm thinking perhaps Martha had Emily with one of the Shears boys out of wedlock, before she married David Lang. I have no record of her since then, so would love to know the answers.

Thank you for all the information Pam.
I haven't been doing this very long, so only had some of the above.
Emily Shears march quarter 1877 Amesbury Wiltshire 5a 185 you have 3 months to register child
The above Emily, seems the obvious one. Those numbers on the end, is that all I need to order a birth certificate.

Goodness, there are a lot of Shears in one street.
I wonder if the houses belong to a land owner, who these famillies work for.

Hi Hazzy
As a descendent of the Shears clan [my grandparents were John and Ann Shears] I would be grateful if you would share what you find from Emily's birth certificate. I find it difficult to understand why her birth was registered in Amesbury if she was born in Winterslow - I have the Winterslow parish register on loan and shall look in the next few weeks to she if she was baptized in Winterslow.
It is notable that neither Charles nor Maria Shears appear in the online version of the 1881 census provided by LDS, and, although these may be two of the many omissions from the LDS 1881, if these were Emily's parents it is therefore conceivable that Emily was an orphan. She was then taken in by her grandparents and then possibly adopted by her Aunt Martha [assuming Martha and Maria were sisters.
Re-your comment of a lot of Shears in one street. In fact it was an area at the eastern end of the village covering perhaps a few hundred yards, and I assume it comprised clusters of workmen's cottages on the estate of the land owner. The fact the many of the Shears, and indeed many others, were woodmen suggests that there was a large forest, which now seems to have gone.
The earliest documented Shears in Winterslow is William Shears who was married in 1637. From around 1700 onwards the family is well established, and my grandparents in the 1901 census lived probably within a few hundred yards or less of where their ancestors lived 200 hundred years earlier.
Good luck with your searches,
Colin

Thank you Colin, for your reply.
I will indeed, let you know how I get on.
It's fascinating, finding out how they all lived, it's a shame it's not there anymore, as I wanted to go to Winterslow to have a look around. I have so many in my family that lived in the same area, Bell, Green, Judd. By looking on the census and there neighbours, you realize how they continued to live in the same area, which I suppose is understandable in those days.

Hi Hazel
Don't give up on Winterslow, if you are in the area it is worth a visit. There is very little to see, but being able to put places to names does help you understand how the families and marriages fit together. I have been twice, but then I only live 75 miles away.
It is an isolated, widespread amorphpous area with no focal point. The church is on the extreme western edge and the common is on the eastern edge. There are two pubs and a village shop but I did not see any sites of interest. I found my great grandparents' graves and I would expect you to find graves of interest.
I see that you mention the Judds. Nearly everybody from Winterslow has a Judd ancestor. You should have fun tracing yours as there are about 300 Judd baptisms up to 1837.
Wiltshire Family History Society has published complete transcripts of baptisms and burials from the Winterslow parish register, and, if you are intent on tracing yours ancestors, the transcripts are well worth buying.
Happy hunting
Colin

Thank you Colin for all the info. I'm not to far away, so think I will still pay a visit.
It's interesting about the parish records. Can you give me the information, as to were I can purchase these transcriptions. Save going to the Wiltshire records office.

Thank you daisy. It could well be her.
I've just sent of for the certificate, as I found out on the 1881 census that Charles Shears was living in the Amesbury area then, so it's quite feasible she was registered there and he could be the father. I've also found out he had another daughter called Rose. She appears to live with Issac Shears in 1881 then with her father, back with the rest of the family in 1891, but no sign of Emily.
