In the 1881 census I have John Buckle who is recorded as a caretaker in an art gallery in Ipswich. Does anyone know which art gallery this might be? Are/were there several? Where is/was it located? thanks for any help,
Janet

Just to follow on from Hephzibah's informative message, there is a photograph of the interior of the Museum in Ipswich at http://www.ipswich.gov.uk/Services/Museums+and+Mansion/
It is an amazing monument to Victoriana - lots of stuffed birds and animals which seem to meet with a large amount of disapproval nowadays. However, they are retained as it is one of the best collections ever assembled and does give us a look at one of the biggest interests of the Victorians.
Christchurch Mansion is now the main art gallery in Ipswich, having had a demolition order placed on it Felix Cobbold decided to give it to the people of Suffolk - I know he had a fight on his hands to see his plans carried out. This happened in the 1800s but I cannot thinK of the exact date at the moment.
More here, with a list of paintings on exhibition http://www.artguide.org/museums.php?id=1497553M
Of course suffolk artists feature prominantly. There is a photograph of the House on the first web site URL.
