Margaret Stewart 1853, 1861/1871 Census
« on: Monday 30 April 07 21:17 BST (UK) »

I'm looking for Margaret Stewart born 1853 in Coldstream. I know that her mother is Elizabeth born c1814 also from Coldstream but i do not know who her father is (suspect it's Alexander). They appear on the Durham Census for 1891 when Margaret is then an Eltringham, and Elizabeth is with them listed as Widow. I have checked the IGI, but due to the inaccuracies on their i had to check the census, as Elizabeth's husband Alexander apparently was born 1831 (17 yr age gap). Margaret has 1 sibling according to the IGI, Alexander c1851 Coldstream.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

That's the one. It's just a muddle with the parents probably having a 17 year age gap. Need to confirm it with the census details.

Hello again Browny,

I have looked and looked at the 1861 census and the only family that seem in anyway likely is the following:

276 Parlimentory Road, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire

Alexander Stewart Head M 37yrs Pattern Maker b. Blacklirff, Linlithgowshire
Elizabeth Stewart Wife F 37yrs b. Dumbarton, Dumbartonshire
Margaret Stewart Dau F 8yrs Scholar b. Glasgow, Lanark
Alexander Stewart Son M 5yrs Scholar b. Glasgow, Lanark
Daivid Webster Boarder M 28yrs Engineer Railway b. Ceres, Fifeshire
Christina Graham Boarder F 23yrs Domestic Servant b. Perth, Perthshire
Janet Cairns Boarder F 1mth b. Glasgow, Lanark

I realise that the place of birth is wrong and that Alexander her brother is younger than her not older, but I will check the 1871 to see if it helps  Undecided

Going back a bit to the 1851 Census. This looks like Alexander and Elizabeth, everyone born in Coldstream apart from Alexander:

Alexr Stewart    35, mason, b. England
Elizb Stewart    36
Adam Stewart    6
Robt Stewart    2

Address: Coldstream New Town

The entry you found on IGI, was it a submitted entry?

Regards.

Elizabeth's still in Cottenham Street in 1881. She's living with nephew Adam Stewart and two boarders.  Smiley

I think this is a possible for Margaret in 1881:

14 Gloucester Road, Elswick
William McCowan, m, 30, Woolwich, Kent -- Railway clerk
Margt. McCowan, f, 27, Scotland

There's a December 1874 marriage date for them on freebmd and a marriage of a Margaret McCowan and George Eltringham in Newcastle, March 1884.  Smiley
