Hello Elaine, Seems we may have the a few branches of the same tree My father name was Edward Walker Herkes Clark born 1910 Dundonald Den Aucherderran his Father was Shanks Fleming Clark born 18 May 1884 in Dundonald Auchterderran (brother of David Fleming Clark) mother Mary Walker Herkes born 7th May 1889 born Liberton. I have been researching our family history for some years now Do you have any information on Marian Clark she married a David Herd about 1921 they lived at16 Ninteen St Bowhill their was a William Herd who married a Margaret Clark Dad used to say he had a cousin who was a good football player his name was David Herd any relation??Was very excited reading your email exchanges with Kate Regards Christine

Mary Ann Owens - The bravest woman I never knew

Dont mean to intrude here, between Christine and Elaine, but Ive just noticed the name Herd crop up, in Auchterderran? Almost all of my Herd ancestors come from that place and I also have a branch of the Herd tree who were the Patersons. I have a guy in my tree called Shanks Paterson. This sounds like quite an uncommon first name and if you have it in your tree, along with some Herds, makes me think there is a link somewhere! Look forward to hearing from you both Regards, Matt

Yes there is a link, I have 4 Shanks Pattersons in that line. Also plenty of Herds on the school list.

From the Index of Veteran Employees of the Fife Coal Co. employed as of 15 Aug 1945. The men are at least 65 years old:
Hunter, James, 1 Terris Pl. Cowdeneath, Aitken Colliery Hunter, William, Elmbank, Main St. Kelty, Aitken Colliery
Men from Auchterderran killed in WWI: Hunter, George, private, 1st Black Watch. Killed in Ypres, Belgium, 1st November 1914
Men killed in Fife Collieries:
Minto Colliery: Andrew Hunter 36 yrs, Oct 19, 1921

There's a George DAVIE b. Sept 7th 1894 son of James. If you want more let me know Also a James and Janet Davie No other Davies.
