I was discussing this with a webbie but non genealogy friend last night and would be interested to hear your views on what you think is the most important bit required for a good family history site.

That's a difficult one Kerry  Undecided

I think it's the stories first, but you need at least an outline tree to put them in context and local history to set the scene and photos for visual interest and other things to grab attention.

I agree with Gadget, that it's the stories that keep the attention.

The names may help people find a site in a search engine, and if they are looking for connections, they will read throught the lists of names.
But if that's all you have to offer, then if they can't find a connection, they will quickly leave.

But get them interested in a story, and they will probably stay for while  Grin

Well it's interesting Gadget because, I said the most important thing to me is to put up the stories of the ancestors so they can be remembered, the tree to me is incidental which he agreed with.

The conversation started because we were talking about blogging and I related to him a thread on here a couple of weeks ago with JulianB and PaulE (I think) and he agreed with them that blogs could be the way to go and that  the most important thing on a family history website should be the process of doing your family history.  Step by step who you are searching for etc.

I didn't agree, I want to see my ancestors brought to life, he wants to see an interesting website!

Exactly what I said about having the tree, put the names on the site and they get googled, he said well if they are mentioned in your process they will still be picked up.

I still disagree with him, I think  Undecided

If we start discussing the process of finding, then it will become a story about our quest. That's interesting but it somehow down grades the real stories that we uncover as we go along. If we do both, it would have a tendency to ramble on and on and on.................

I'm not sure about Blogs - Julian and Paul suggested i might like to do one about something or other but it then becomes a 'Dear Diary' type affair and I left that behind a long time ago. Come to think of it, I never was into that, anyway - too concerned with living  Huh

My view of Blogs is that they should be interactive. If it's just a series of stories or refs, etc. (sorry Paul and Julian), then you might as well do a website and update it frequently.

Well, that's my two pennorth, anyway  Undecided

To me forums like Rootschat is almost a blog anyway, because it's charting from the beginning of my time here the process I am going through as I find ancestor after ancestor.

For me I want to show the finished stories of these people, a memory if you like of these dead and forgotten people so that other people can become as involved in their lives as I am.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Anyway I still agree with you Gadget!

For me it's photographs/family tree as my site is mainly used for other family members to look at the photos that we have and know the family tree.  I haven't been doing it long enough to be able to make detailed stories of the people - the sort of information I have is: born, census, census, married, child, child, census, child, census, census, death.

You've got the bare bones of your story, you just need some details now.

Andrew

Start by adding their addresses and occupations.  If children were with grandparents on the census, find out why.  Were they just on holiday, did they leave a town for the country for their health - my mother and siblings did.  They took it in turns to visit their farming cousins and get some fresh air.  Not long before you have a few paragraphs at least.

You could also find out interesting snippets of info about your living relatives, for your descendants to read.

I think the stories are the most important things, but photos and information/names/chronologies are also important because they get you thinking .....

My view of Blogs is that they should be interactive. If it's just a series of stories or refs, etc. (sorry Paul and Julian), then you might as well do a website and update it frequently.

Blogs come in all shapes and sizes.  One reason I started my GenBIRes stuff via a blog was that (a) there was an opportunity for people to comment, and (b) it's free web space.  Funding these things is a big issue (without being smothered in irrelevant ads).

Hello All,
I had to vote for stories of ancestors, because that will lead naturally into family trees, places, photos, and local history. I am still sorting out my options as to how to achieve this.
