Henry Smith of Preston
« on: Thursday 03 May 07 16:33 BST (UK) »

Henry Smith bc1828 in Preston is my gr gr gr grandfather. I'm fairly certain that his father was a John Smith (as it says on the marriage certificate) but I can't find any possible birth that I could consider to be Henrys.

If someone could give me the answers to the following questions, it would be appreciated greatly -

Is there naturalisation or name change records available for the 1820s?
Is there a way of ordering the birth certificate of someone born in 1828? - this last question I'm fairly certain I can't because records didn;t start until 1837.

Hi,

Can't think of anywhere myself where you can get proof of his birth, unless you can find the actual parish records.

I presume you have found Henry with his father John on the 1841 census?  At least then you know which specific area he was most likely born in.  If not,  was his father's profession shown as an overlooker on Henry's marriage cert. In which case on 1841 census I have found

John Smith age 45 Overlooker in factory
wife  Earlen(?) age 45
Mary age 20 daug cotton weaver
Ellen daug age 15 cotton weaver
Henry age 13

all ties in with ages. Smiley

John Smith m Esther Eccleston 22 May 1815 Preston, Lancashire

I found it via the IGI.

I've found a marriage in 1772 which might be William and Esther, although they would have to have been quite young -

William Eccleston m Esther Ball 24 AUG 1772   Saint John, Preston

Hi,

Remembering that it was not unheard of to marry  at the age of 12 and up Shocked  Found the following on IGI

Another Esther born to same parents but in 1787, I think their first girl born died young. Also there is a William Eccleston born 31 May 1776 c. 6 June 1776 son of William and Esther, that brings their marriage date more into perspective.
