Hi I am not aware of a parish called Penrith in Cornwall. There is a district called Penwith - the far west of Cornwall. Can you tell us where you got the information about Mary Ann and hopefully, we will be able to help you. Barbara

Hi, this information was found on the 1861 census. I looked for Penrith, found Penwith as you said, but did find it written as Penrith on a few websites for some reason. It's very plainly written on the census form (even though Cornwall is spelt Cornwell), so obviously in her mind that's where she came from.

Can you give me the reference for the 1861 census? Do you have Mary on any other censuses? I will then have a look around for you. Barbara

Thanks, here's the 1861 reference: Berkshire, Culham, District 2, R.G. 9/735. On the 1851 census it gives her birth as Abingdon, which I simply accepted until I saw the 1861 entry, and there were plenty of Dorns in Abingdon (she married a man name Dore just to make it weirder) and it remains possible that the 1861 census birth place is wrong, but that's a huge error if it is. In any case, on the 1841 census it gives an N to "born in county", very plainly. Also, I have the Abingdon PR's on CD and there is no Mary Ann Dorn born at any time around 1807, nothing even close. This is my mystery lady. She died in 1862.

can't see her on any records I've got access to. You could try emailing the online parish clerk for St Just in Penwith www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/h_k/just_in_penwith_st.php

From the census information I agree that Mary Ann probably came from Cornwall - she is unlikely to have made up those details. I did wonder whether she might have come from Penryn. GENUKI implies that the IGI covers this parish but I am not sure that it covers baptisms for the period that you want. It may be worth emailing the OPC - see web page below. http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/e_g/gluvias_st.php What details do you have from Mary Ann's marriage? Are the witnesses worth following up? Barbara

The CD I have doesn't list witnesses, but it's a good idea, I'll look into that. I'll try the OPC, and see where that leads. Many thanks for all your ideas.

I will do that, and as I'm having exactly the same problems finding her son's father-in-law I'm now thinking these people came from the planet Zarg, a common feeling among researchers I believe:)
