Hello
I have Alfred & Frances Gill in 1881 in Brighton, but could someone kindly see if they can be found in the earlier or later census?
In 1881 they were living at 2 St Georges Road, Brighton with 6 of their children: Alfred GILL 61 East Dean, Sussex, England Carryman & Coal Merchant Frances E. GILL 52 Clapham, Sussex, England
Alfred Gill m Frances Elizabeth Pelling c 1852. Frances' parents John & Jane Pelling died in 1833 & 1838 and I believe Frances was a housemaid in Brighton in 1851, although I don't have a source for that information
Cheers, Jane

Thanks Pels
"Dairyman + Coal Merchant, Employing 11 men and 2 boys, Farmer of 68 acres" Seems like a strange mix of occupations And good to see Harry & Elizabeth there. Harry came out to Australia in 1882, but I can't locate him in 1881
And now I'll have to fossick around to see whether Rose is related too

I've had a look to see if I can find a possible match for Harry in 1881 and I'm afraid I can't see one either?
Also no obvious match for Frances or Alfred in 1851 - what a shame .. .. Unless someone else can help?
Kind regards,
Pels

Thanks Again Pels.
Frances ought to be in Brighton. She could also be listed as Young or Pelling Young as her father (my 4GGF) was the natural son of Hugh Pelling, although his mother Elizabeth French was married to James Young at the time
Harry should be in London - according to the Aust Dictionary of Biography he won a scholarship to the National Art Training School in South Kensington (aka Royal College of Art) which he held for 5 years.
The grandson William South has me puzzled, as I can't see that any of the Gill girls married a South. Maybe it was a second marriage or one of the boys had been playing up?
Cheers, Jane

Looking at the 1861 record I wonder where Kate, Harry and Alice are? They would be only 8, 6 & 2 yo, so too young to be out on their own.
Uncle Henry died in Apr 1861 so maybe Frances was nursing him and sent the kids to a relative, but then why keep the 4yo Elizabeth at home?
