Hi Billy,
As you say, that gap is certainly a bit odd.
Children of John ANDERSON & Janet BINNING, all Bathgate, West Lothian James 1806 Archibald 1808 John 1811 Christian 1824 Smith 1826 Samuel Martin 1828
What information do you have about your William - approximate date of birth, birthplace, etc. Are you sure that he is a child of John & Janet?
JAP PS: I suppose you've seen the Smith ANDERSON (an unusual name?) on FreeCEN in 1841 - as a 15yo male servant in Whitburn, West Lothian.

HI Jap, thank you for you help with the research. I have got all the children you list, the info I have on my 3x Great grandfather William Anderson is that when he died in 1903 at the age of 84 in Denny, Stirlingshire it was stated on his death certificate that his parents were Janet Binnie and John Anderson and he was born Bathgate. he was married for 60 years to Hellen Miller and the had 11 children and 80 grandchildren the traditonal naming sequence of children points to Williams parents being John and Janet. Knowing that it was the grandson who provided the details for the death cert this could be very wrong!Previous census returns for william have stated Bathgate I am fairly convinced that my William is related to the children mentioned. I supose there is a posabilty that Janet and John emigrated then came back to Bathgate but they must have been somewere and they took the bother to regester the births of thier children so there is a good chance they are out there. They lost children to fever so this could have been the reason to move away from the fever area at the time. I have found Smith Anderson and him being a servent at 15 may be due to his parents being away or dead. I have not got the death cert for Smith but he was married to Marion Bennie and was a Provost of Kilsyth and a grain and comm. agent. I should get a copy of his death cert to check out his parents names. sorry this is a bit winded , thanks for your help, Billy.

Hi Billy,
I don't know whether you know this - but Smith Anderson is buried in Kilsyth Cemetery.
The incription on his stone is:
1871 Erected by Smith Anderson in memory of his daughter JANET born 1853, died 1856 Also his son WILLIAM born 1839, died 1863 The above SMITH ANDERSON born 1826, died 1900 His daughter JEANIE born 1856, died 1901 His wife MARION BENNEY born 1826 died 1907 His son SMITH born 18??, died 1933?
This might help when you're trying to pinpoint dates of birth and dates of death to get certificates. Unfortunately there's no dates or months, only years.
PM me with your e-mail address and I'll forward some photos.
Anne

Hi again Billy,
I'm sure you are right about your William's parentage - and his birthdate (ca 1819) is well within the time of the missing children. And (you say) William gave his birthplace as Bathgate, so one has to wonder whether there were pages missing from the parish register with the baptisms for those missing years - or whether John & Janet didn't baptize their children in those missing years for some other reason. Perhaps it might be worth getting the relevant film into your local LDS Family History centre just to check this out ...
Anne's MI is great (exact year of birth for Smith). Perhaps there is an MI for your William in Denny?
And perhaps there might be MIs for John & Janet in Bathgate - though I guess you've checked this out.
Regards,
JAP PS: I wouldn't read anything into Smith being employed on a farm away from his parents in 1841 - at his age this was more usual than not in those days.

JAP,
I found William & his wife's grave in Denny for Billy last year.
The MI:
In memory of WILLIAM ANDERSON who died at East Borland 25th March 1903 aged 84 years HELEN MILLER his wife died 17th May 1906 aged 87 years JANET ANDERSON their daughter MARGARET FLEMING died 29th December 1906 wife of John Anderson Who died 29th March 1915 aged 71 years
Billy,
Here I am blabbing on about MI's and at the back of my mind I'm thinking - did I actually send you the photos?
If I did (and I'm keeping my fingers that I remembered to do so), did you get round to getting a copy of his death cert? It obviously won't confirm his date of birth, but it will confirm who his parents are.
Anne

Hi Anne,
I might have known that you would have dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's
Latterly, I've been checking out people's previous posts in order to avoid duplication but this time ...
I really can't quite see how Billy can get further back, with any certainty, with his William's parents - who, it seems, are almost certainly John ANDERSON & Janet BINNING. Unless there are MIs for them somewhere. Though perhaps there is information on earlier posts re John & Janet in censuses with ages and birthplaces? And, if they lived to grand old ages, perhaps their deaths might be on SP.
Regards,
JAP
