Langford Thomas
« on: Friday 04 May 07 14:06 BST (UK) »

Hi all I am new to this so hopefully I am on the right track I am trying to find the parents of Thomas Burgoine born 1859 I think in Mottram Cheshire ,in 1880 he married Elizabeth Robinson they resided at Stockport Rd Tellow Court 1. They had 1 son that I know of Frederick Burgoine born in 1883 , died 1943, buried in Hyde.
Any help would be immensely appreciated as I have hit a wall Thanks

Hi,
Welcome to rootschat.
Looking at the birth indexes on ancestry i can t  find a Thomas in 1859 but there is the following..
JFM 1857
Thomas Mottram Baron Burgoine
Stockport  8a 10
Stockport includes Hyde, Cheshire.

If you think it may be him i can give you entries for the 1861 and 1871 censuses with his parents Frederick and Sarah.
The name Mottram might suggest it is him and also the name Frederick but things are nt always that simple!
If you are sure of his marriage it might be worth getting the marriage certificate,to find his fathers name.Certificates only cost £7 and are available from the GRO over the net.
Best wishes

Hi

I think this is him at that address with Elizabeth in 1881. Birth place given as Hyde not Mottram (but I notice that birth ref Cath has given gives a middle name of Mottram)

1881 Census
Thomas Burgoin age 22 b Hyde Cheshire

Address:    Stockport Rd Tetlow Court 1

Elizabeth Burgoin    20 stone mason
Thomas Burgoin    22  cotton weaver

And another possibility in 1901 with son Frederick and other children. This time the birth place is Gee Cross which I believe is part of Hyde.

What great occupations they all have Smiley

Hi both,
That info ties in nicely with the earlier censuses
 1861 Gee Cross, Werneth, Hyde RG9/2559  125/10
Frederic Burguine  head mar 34  Stonemason           Cheshire, Werneth
Sarah       "             wife  mar  31 Power loom weaver cotton  "   "
Hannah   "             dau        9 Scholar                          "              "
Amelia      "             dau       6   "                                  "              "
Thomas M B "          son        4  "                                  "              "

1871Werneth, Hyde.Rg10/3652  76/23
I can t read the address but it is next to Stockport Road.

Frederick Burgoin  head 44 Stonemason  Cheshire, Werneth
Sarah     "             wife    41                        "              "
Hannah "              dau      18 Cotton twister "           "
Amelia   "               dau      15 Cotton weaver "         "
Thomas M B "         son  14      Cork cutter?    "         "
Fred             "         son  1                               "         "
Maggie         "        dau   5 mos                        "         "

Big gap betweem Thomas and    Fred, perhaps there were other children who didnt survive?

Best wishes

And in 1891...

1891 England Census
Born abt 1855 Hyde, Cheshire, England
Address:Smith F??d   (possibly Smithy Fold again)

Thomas Burgoyn    36 stone mason
Elizabeth Burgoyn    30 cotton weaver
John Burgoyn    9
Fred Burgoyn    8
Ethel Burgoyn    6

RG12/2791/151 p 49

AND LIVING NEXT DOOR ARE

Frederick a retired Stone Mason, his wife Sarah and some more children

1891  Census

Fredrick Burgoin 63 RETIRED STONE MASON HEAD (Born Werneth, Cheshire)
Sarah Burgoin    60   (Born Hyde) WIFE
Hannah Burgoin    38 COTTON TWISTER? (Born Hyde) DAUGHTER

Fred Burgoin    21 BOBBIN CARRIER (Born Hyde) SON
Maggie Burgoin    20 COTTON REELER (Born Hyde) DAUGHTER
Violet Burgoyn    6 (Born Hyde) GRANDDAUGHTER

RG12/ 2791/151 p49

It says Maggie is a daughter but possibly Fred and Maggie are married with child Violet.

It all sounds like the people you are after and matches with the info from Cath - but I agree with Cath that getting the certificate and confirming the parents would be the safest thing to do..

Yes that does appear to be a big gap before Maggie and William come along... I checked the original and they are down as son and daughter with those ages - all born Hyde.

Just checked the 1841 again and it definitely says born in county.

But If I had to bet on one of them being right it would be Nottingham.

It was quite clearly written as Nottingham so unless it was an original mistake then it would seem likely (unless old James was just being mischievous! Grin Grin)

Thanks to all for your input, I am not sure if Mottram was his middle name but anything is a possibility I was originaly given his birth date as 1849 until I had found his marriage which states he was born about 1859, his marriage took place at Portwood St Paul and the spelling of his surname on this record was Burgoine so I am thinking that would also be the spelling on his birth record. I had found him and Elizabeth in the 1881 census and I am sure they are the Stockport Rd Tellow Crt1 Burgoines. Frederick Burgoine was born 1883 and he married Clara Anne or Annie Langford.
Cath 151 it would be great if you could post the 1861/ 1871 census entries

Thanks so much for your time and help Heidi

Hi all...just had a thought and checked for their burials...

If you go to ...

http://public.tameside.gov.uk/candc/regenq.asp

you can search on the surname and you will find a grave for Frederick buried with Clara Ann at Hyde Cemetery.

25/5/1943    Frederick Burgoine          59 Years
13/2/1929    Clara Annie Burgoine        46 Years
