Hello there,

I wondered if someone could help me.   I have an ancestor who was in WW1  Private Harold Phillips.   He was in the Yorkshire Regiment.  He died in Egypt and was buried there.   I have looked at war memorials and cannot find his name.   Did everyone who was killed in the war have there name on a memorial?

regards

Nicky

Hello Nicky,

I think I have found him on the ALEXANDRIA (CHATBY) MILITARY AND WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY website..

If he was the son of Charles and Harriet Philips its him

Best wishes

Hi

Do you know where his home village/town in the area was?  I'd say he's far more likely to be on a memorial to the sons of the village than a large town like Middlesbrough, because of the sheer numbers.

Hi Nicky,

Have you been on to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website to print off his certificate and see his full details?
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=109629

As his parents' address was Warrenby, Redcar, I would think he's more likely to be on one of the Redcar memorials than Middlesbrough.
I don't think the Redcar memorials have been transcribed by the Cleveland FHS yet, see this site for Yorkshire Regiment North Yorkshire: http://www.greenhowards.org.uk/ww1-remembrance/html-files/war-memorials-north-yorks.htm#r

Jane, I think there are three in Redcar, St. Peter's, Sacred Heart, and Redcar Cemetery

hello there thankyou so much for your help.

I had been on that website thankyou.

I live near Redcar but didnt know where the memorials were.  I typed in Warrenby Coatham which is where he was born and the warrenby website came up.   It says that in the coatham church there is a war memorial and amongst the list of names is private harold Phillips.  could be mine.

Hi Nicky,

Glad you live so near, should be easy for you then!  (I should have remembered, we've talked about Warrenby and Phillips before I think!)
Happy hunting,
