Someone in Wigan (or near) may be able to answer this...
« on: Friday 03 December 04 06:23 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

I have a book that was a prize given to my Ggrandfather in 1906, Wigan.

Inside the cover there is a label with  "St Pauls P.S.A Wigan" it also has the motto  "One is your Master, even Christ, and all ye are Brethren"

I'm obviously assuming St Pauls is a church, but have no idea where in WIgan it is located, and further i am also interested in trying to work out what the "P.S.A" might mean.

Any suggestions??

Thanks once again for help given! Cheesy

Hi BC

My first thought was PS/Primary School?Huh

There was/is usually a school associated with main churches in towns.

Hope you manage to find out.

A bit confusing. P.S.A. was a Wesleyan Sunday afternoon club "Pleasant Sunday Afternoon". Activities were usually hiking or nature study and, in winter, choral. However that would not apply to St. Paul's as no Wesleyan Chapel would have that title and St. Paul's is indeed a church in Wigan but not a district, as far as I know.

Hi,  Smiley
I actually live in the Wigan area, although not originally from there.

I have located 3 St. Pauls for you.

There is the one in Goose Green , which has already been suggested.
The other 2 are on the wiganworld site. They are:

Hindley St Pauls, a congregational church with records going back to 1811

Wigan Congregational [Independant] Standishgate[St Pauls] with records from 1777.
Standishgate is the name of the road.

Sorry, I've no thoughts on the initials yet. Huh

If there is anything else in this area I can help with, I will try. Smiley Smiley

Don't know much about Wesleyan Chapels though.

Hi,

Found a link between 'Pleasant Sunday Afternoon' and Congregational churches.

Try  www.blackcountrysociety.co.uk/articles/sundayafternoon.htm

Apparently, the chap who started the whole thing was a Congregationalist so your link to Wigan may be one of those two Churches I found.
Good rooting

Thanks for that Olly!!

The link was interesting (havent looked at all of it yet)

Im more inclined to think it was from St Pauls in Standishgate, if my memory serves me correctly it isnt really far from where my ggrandfather lived!!

So as usual will keep searching!

Merry Christmas!

St. Pauls church is on Warrington Road in Wigan.
It can be reached by coming off the M6 at Marus Bridge and following Warrington Road(main road) into Wigan. St. Pauls church is located about 200 yds after main roundabout.
St. Pauls Primary school, with strong connebtions to the church, is located on same road but on opposite side.
PSA ? perhaps something about parents' scholars association or something. Just a guess
Hope this is some use

Inside the cover there is a label with  "St Pauls P.S.A Wigan" it also has the motto  "One is your Master, even Christ, and all ye are Brethren"

It will add little to your research but a] the text above is from Matthew 23.8 b] The P.S.A. movement was not a children's Sunday School - it was designed for adults.

PSA can be short form for Psaalms, is it P.S.A. or PSA ?
Example:-
PSA-02 God Has Forgotten Me Psalms 42 & 43 PC C60 - -
PSA-03 God Has Remembered Me Psalms 116
Charlie
PSA "One is your Master, even Christ, and all ye are Brethren"?
