It could be. It all depends upon how carefully the transcript included in the IGI has been made. If the person who did the transcript ignored any info re birthplace then you would be none the wiser. But you presumably know the birthplace from some other source.
The IGI is not infallible, I have found, especially in the case of illegitimate births

Hi Patrish

Is it a submitted or an extracted record on the IGI?
How common is the name?
Parents sometimes took thier children to their home parish for baptism which can explain why birthplace and baptism place are different.
Why not tell us the name and the details you have - and we can advise further  Smiley

Thanks Folks,

It not actually me that asking, I found it for someone else, it is an extracted entry.

Here is the thread link, perhaps you would be kind enough to  take a look and see if you can answer her.

Hi Patrish
I have had a look at the 1841-1871 censuses and can see a William J Praill b Chelmsford who fits with the IGI record you found.
I will see if I can find the man wanted by Kathryn on the 1841 or 1851 census.
My recollection is that IGI coverage is not good for Essex.

Thank you Barbara,

Yes I know that, I searched just last week for some ancestors born in Barking, nothing on the IGI but Daisypetal kindly found a link to the local studies centre and they found all the baptisms for me, how lucky was that. Grin

Hello Patrish

I have decided that I need to go to Chelmsford to sort out my Essex ancestors - no idea when, as it is so far away!
Not having much luck with William Prayle born Dagenham in the 1841 or 1851 census.  I think we need some more information about him.
Do you want to post a reply to Kathryn on the other thread telling her what we have established so far and asking if she has any other info on her man?

Hi Frances,

I have p.m.her saying I had asked for other help so please feel free to post to her, she mentions that her man was in the Army, so may have been abroad during the 41 and 51 census,s. Huh

Hi,

Just a reminder that you can search Chelmsford PRs yourself from your computer via the ERO's SEAX system, it's free and you do not have to register.

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/login.asp

On the page that appears click on "Guest"
On the next page go to the right hand side and click on "Image search"
Then on the next page type in "chelmsford parish register"
Then off you go. good luck.

Also Moulsham & Springfield can be searched.

Hello Findem
Thanks for that information. I will take a look at the site - although I don't think any of my lot were in the parishes you mention  Sad

Just in case you need them, the Stebbing, Maldon All Saints and Maldon St Peter PRs are also online in the SEAX system.

Regards.
