Storrington birth 1794
« on: Friday 03 December 04 07:17 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone please help me with a birth in 1794 in Storrington.

Joseph MUSTCHIN was christened on the 5 March 1794 in Storrington.
A relative gave me this information.
I know his mother was listed as Ann MUSTCHIN.

I know on the 6 November 1820 Joseph married Elizabeth BOTTING in West Grinstead.

I also know this couple had eight children.

I have the 1851 and 1861 census details for Joseph and he died in 1864. I also know that information.

Now we get to what I don't know:

His father would be nice. Maybe he was a base born child and his mother married in the next year or two??
Maybe his father was out of town or at war or something similar at the time of birth or christening??

I would love to break this brick wall once and for all.

Anybody out there know of anywhere I can lay my hands on this type of information without breaking my very slim piggy bank. I am a subscriber to Ancestry.com and they don't have the info. I have searched family search.com and they don't have it. Where else can I try???

Thanks for any directions given. I have other births and marriages and even business dealings in that time in Storrington and would love to be able to cement these people into the tree.

Regards

Sandie MUSTCHIN

Hi Sandie,
It looks to me as if Joseph was base born if only the mother's name is given.  Sometimes on parish records it states base born, sometimes not.
This marriage occured in Storrington 6 years after Joseph's birth,

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Storrington, West Sussex,  Date: 15 Apr 1800:
Subject: Ann MUTCHEN, sp
Spouse: John AYLLING, bach

To me it looks like your Ann.
Try the Sussex Family History Group for a look-up (for the address just type into your search engine) Any problems about membership come back to me and I'll ask as I'm a member.

Hi Sandie and anyone else who has an interest in this Village -

I intended to mention this before but did not have the book at the time - just got it from the Library again..you might find it interesting if you have rellies in Storrington.

Storrington in Georgian and Victorian Times by Joan Ham.  Looks like it was a private publication.

This lady has written quite a lot on local history and I think can be contacted through the Storrington Museum, The Old School, Church Street, Storrington, West Sussex.
