1841 census
« on: Tuesday 01 May 07 07:05 BST (UK) »

can someone please help with a 1841  census lookup for the children of Edward and Maudlin Vigers. I have them living with their 2 youngest daughters Hannah 1836-1925 and  Sarah 1838-1915  in Middlesex.

There are 8 children i cant find
Edward 1818-1897,
Francis 1820-1895,
Thomas 1824-1906,
Robert 1826-1912,
James 1828-1856,
Elizabeth 1830-1909,
Maud 1832-1917 and
John 1834-1914.

Is it possible that they resided somewhere else as they we all too young to be married.

any assistance greatly appreciated

Jody,

I found them by searching for a Maud (the most unusual of the 8 names) born 1832 +/- 1 and living in Middlesex or Surrey.  That took me to this family.

I wonder if Peace Toplis was a relative of Mary Toplis?

There is a baptism for Peace Toplis in the IGI but I think you'll need someone to do a look-up and check the baptism record:

Parents Henry Toplis and Peace, 26 January  1814   Saint Mary Lambeth

I don't know if they are related, I did look on the IGI but didn't see her as part of the family Peace seems to belong to. Do you know if the parish registers are available on the internet or do you have to look in person? The mother appears to be Peace Martin so there may be a connection there as well. Johns brother Edward married Maudlin Martin so they might be sisters or cousins.
Why couldn' t they have kept extensive records for us this would be so much easier.

I found the marriage of Henry Toplis and Peace Martin :  23 April 1811 at Saint Martin In The Fields.

I had another look on the IGI for children of Henry and Peace. There are quite a few listed:

Sarah Elizabeth Toples -  Christening: 29 Jul 1812 St Mary's, Lambeth
Peace Toplis - Christening: 25 (or 26?) Jan 1814 St Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey
Mary Ann Toplis -  Christening: 15 Nov1815 St Mary's, Lambeth
James Toplis - Christening: 23 Jul 1817 Saint Leonards, Streatham
Maud Toplis -  Christening: 26 Jan 1819 Saint Leonards, Streatham
Henry Toplis - Christening: 28 May 1822 Saint Leonards, Streatham
James Robert Toplis - Christening: 9 APR 1824 Saint Mary's, Lambeth
Harriet Toplis - Christening: 3 May 1826 Holy Trinity, Clapham
(parents are recorded as Henry Toplis and Peace Martin)
Harriet Mary Toplis -  Christening: 20 May 1831 Saint Mark, Kennington
Edward Toplis - Christening: 23 May 1834 Saint Mark, Kennington

I also found the death of Peace Toplis in Lambeth 4Q 1839 on Free BMD.

hopefully this may be the correct family.  Thanks again for all your assistance, their seem to be many family inter marriages in my family so maybe they stayed within in a small social group of extended families and there are quite a few who have used surnames as second names for their children.

Mary Toplis appears in the 1871 census as an unmarried cousin in the household of Thomas Vigers so that could be a connection. I dont know if she married because she is not in their 1881 census.
